Her gaze shot up, emotion deepening the blue of her eyes. She cupped his cheeks with warm hands, then rose to her toes and kissed him.

CHAPTER 25

Hannah pulled over in front of the Hunter family home. Cars filled the driveway and street, including Erik’s Corvette. She’d been planning to come with him, but her open house had run late, and then she’d had to go back to the office to do some paperwork for an offer that had been put in on a house.

She leaned her head back against the seat, massaging her temple. A headache had started to ping behind her eyes a short while ago. Not only that, but ever since the attack, she still felt tired and not like herself.

Man, the stress of this guy being out there was kicking her ass. A part of her knew she should slow down to compensate, but she couldn’t, not after she’d already taken so much time off. She couldn’t keep asking Leo and Taylor to cover for her.

Her watch vibrated. She frowned when she saw her blood sugars were high.

How the hell were they high? She hadn’t eaten anything that would spike them, and she’d injected accordingly. She sighed. Stress. It must be the stress. Her numbers had been all over the place for weeks.

Still, she pulled out her lancet and glucometer to double-check. After a strip was in the machine, she pricked her finger and dropped the blood on the end.

Yep. High. Great.

She’d just closed her eyes when a knock came at the window. She jumped, her eyes shooting open to see Erik on the other side of the glass, his brows tugged together, concern on his face.

Crap. How long had he been watching her?

He opened the door and lowered to his haunches. “Hey. You okay?”

“Yeah. My sugars are just a bit high, and I have a small headache.” Small, but constant.

His hand went to the back of her neck, and he massaged gently. “You’re working too hard.”

His touch alone went a long way toward easing the ache in her temple. “I have to. I have so many houses to sell.”

By the look on his face, he didn’t approve.

She grabbed her bag and climbed from the car. Erik’s arm immediately slipped around her waist. She’d always considered herself an independent person. She’d had to be, growing up in foster care. But around Erik, a part of her wanted to just fall into the man and let him carry her anywhere she needed to go.

“Maybe we should skip dinner. Go home so you can rest,” he said quietly.

When they stopped at the front door, she looked up at him, her finger slipping around his neck and through his hair. “No, I want to be here. And youneedto. You’ve missed too many family dinners. I’m okay.”

Because she couldn’t stop herself, she reached up and kissed his lips. They were soft and warm as they glided over hers. When the kiss ended, she shifted her mouth to his ear, whispering, “You don’t need to worry about me.”

“I’ll always worry, Angel.”

She nibbled her bottom lip. “I’ve been meaning to ask you, have you found anything on the circumstances of Nico’s death?”

“No. Sorry. Chandler’s still looking but hasn’t found anything yet.”

She nodded quickly, hanging on to theyetpart but well aware they might never get any answers.

He trailed his hand down to hers and turned toward the door, leading her inside his parents’ house.

Michael Hunter was sitting in the living room, arm in a cast and sling, a wide smile on his face as he chatted with Rachel, while Andi and Jennifer stood in the kitchen, working at the counter. Nate wasn’t here, since he’d had to get back to his team after his short visit.

Everyone stopped what they were doing and smiled when they saw her, and she moved around the room, giving them hugs.

God, she loved this family. They made her feel like she’d always been a part of them.

When she stopped in the kitchen, she gave Erik’s mother an apologetic smile. “I’m sorry I’m late.”

“Don’t be silly. There is no late in this family. When you get here is when you’resupposedto get here.”
