She did, but there was only fear in her eyes.
“We’re gonna catch this asshole,” Erik vowed.
Her phone dinged with a message. With trembling fingers, she unlocked it. He leaned close and read it with her.
Unknown number: Not you. Not tonight. Let this be a little warning…no one can save you. We all pay for our crimes eventually.
CHAPTER 27
Hannah’s feet trod lightly on the stairs as she went down to the kitchen. She’d slept in late, but then, that wasn’t a surprise with everything that had happened yesterday. She didn’t even know what time they’d gotten home after speaking to the police, but it had been late.
She cringed at the memory of Reuben having to findanotherawful scene at his office. The man was going to fire her, right? Hehadto after all the drama her life was bringing to his business. It was just one thing after another.
The soft rustle of movement sounded from the kitchen moments before she stopped in the doorway. Erik stood at the counter with his back to her. He was shirtless, the corded muscles in his back shifting as he reached into a cabinet.
God, he was beautiful. Most wouldn’t give him that label. Rugged and handsome probably fit better. And yeah, he was definitely those things, but he was also the most beautiful man she’d ever laid eyes on. Every inch of him was perfect, from his hazel eyes to his bronzed skin.
A part of her feared how much she loved him. Because what would happen to her if he ever walked away? If things between them ever shifted, and she lost him?
“You gonna stand there all day, Angel?”
She jolted at his words. Did the man have eyes in the back of his head?
He turned, and his expression punched right through her chest. The impact stole her breath and made her knees weak. Slowly, she moved forward, her feet eating up the space between them until she stood in the circle of his arms.
His eyes darkened, worry swimming in the hazel depths. “How are you this morning?”
She lifted a shoulder. “As good as Icanbe.”
The worst part of last night wasn’t the fear of what could have been. It was seeing that man dead on the ground, knowing he’d died protectingher.
Guilt tugged at her, sending a shudder down her spine. Erik’s hands went to her hips and pulled her closer. “I’m sorry, Angel. I’m sorry he got so close to you when he shouldn’t have.”
She leaned her head against his chest. This was where she felt safest—with Erik. Always with Erik.
Her gaze caught on the Frosted Flakes, and the corners of her mouth twitched. “Cereal?”
“And a lavender oat milk latte.”
Her favorites…but not his. She peeked around him to see the pan on the stove. Ah. He was having an omelet, and he’d already drunk half a cup of coffee. Probablynota lavender oat milk latte.
He pressed a kiss to her head before straightening. She moved over to the drawer and pulled out a new Omnipod insulin pump. She hadn’t been using the pump as much as she should.
As Erik finished making his breakfast, she got the pump ready and set it on her thigh. She waited the five clicks, and it pierced her skin.
Interesting…she didn’t flinch this time. Maybe she was getting used to it.
She glanced up to see Erik’s eyes on her. “Your blood sugars okay?”
“They’ve been terrible lately. Very up and down.”
His brows slashed together. “Because of everything going on?”
She opened her mouth to tell him it was probably the stress, when suddenly she remembered her conversation with Taylor last night…and the realization that she was late.
The blood drained from her face. With everything that had happened, she’d totally forgotten. God, how could she forget something like that?
“Hannah?”
