It takes everything in me not to smirk. I have to hold back for a minute longer while Rostya barks orders to get us back to the mainland. The chopper makes its way to the north side of the island, and the second we are over the water, my eyes connect with the pilot, who dips his head in a nod.
Twisting my wrists just right, I’m able to use the paperclip Damien slipped to me to free myself from these stupid cuffs. We weren’t sure how they would bind me, so we decided Damien would have to improvise once we knew. He had a few other little items tucked in his pocket for when I came at him, but the paperclip worked like a charm.
While Adrik and Rostya are yelling over whose fault it is that the laptop is now destroyed, I subtly unclick the belt over my shoulders, but let it hang there until the last second. Phase one, ready.
“Now that Damien has agreed, let’s move forward.”
Only our inner circle is present for this discussion. Lev, Damien, and Alexi stand up by the projector with me. Laney, Nessa, Havoc, Arrow, and Akio sit in front of us to listen in.
“Once Damien hands me over to his father, everyone needs to move. The gas needs to start flooding the routes to corner the enemy. We know he won’t just let me go. He will need to take us all down.”
Lev steps forward to speak.
“I’ll have a drone following at all times. Akio will give me a signal when you set off the pulse so I can drop out of range.”
Alexi clears his throat. “I will monitor your tracker at all times. If for any reason the device goes offline, the drone will hover alongside to confirm you’re alive.”
I roll my eyes but rub over the healed tattoo on my wrist.
“It’s not going to go offline. It won’t be affected by the device.”
He stares at me, unmoving. I don’t want him to ruin the plan before we can even begin. I know he won’t and is just being paranoid, so I let it go.
“Alright, let’s discuss what needs to happen when the plane goes down.”
Reaching into my pocket, I feel around for the small EMP that will render the helicopter useless the moment it’s activated. I find it easily as Adrik explains to Rostya that the laptop is backed up through a secure server in Sweden just as Lev’s voice comes through the comms we had implanted into our ears for the mission.
They are completely untraceable from the human eye and detectors wouldn’t pick up on them unless the machine was pressed right to my ear. Not that these idiots checked, they were easily too caught up in their plan to see what we were doing.
“Got it. The laptop was retrieved by drones, hacking into the server now.”
That’s when I finally drop the facade of being a helpless captive. Rostya notices almost immediately, but it takes Adrik a second. It’s as if he’s stunned a ‘silly little woman’ was able to play him.
“What the fuck?” Rostya asks just as I smash the button.
Chapter 53
Evie watches for my signal. Once I see our man in the water, I flash her two fingers. She stands, holding onto the seat belt and triggers the EMP. Our electrical systems all fail in an instant. Some people might expect the machine to freak out when this happens, but it’s more of a rapid descent. I quickly get out of my seat as I toss Evie a gun.
She catches it mid-air like the badass she is. I have never been so grateful to have chosen the right side. Adrik and Rostya have fallen into their seats and are holding on for dear life as I move to the back. Carefully I maneuver my hands over the bars installed for this occasion.
It was very surprising to me that Adrik and Rostya did not notice the switch we made with the choppers. They seemed too focused on their task, which was what we were counting on as they boarded my helicopter.
When I make it to Evie, I wrap my arm around her waist and shoot the sensor in the dashboard that makes the propellers stop spinning. Then, we jump.
I do not know if I should be concerned when Evie laughs as she runs out of the side of the smoking aircraft with me. But, I chalk it up to her defeating her demons, even if this is only phase one.
We plummet down until we are under the water, the impact burns my legs but otherwise it’s well-controlled. The second we break the surface, we see two bodies fall from the chopper before it plunges into the sea. I hate to see such a beautiful piece of art die in the waves, but alas, it needed to happen today.
Evie holds onto my hand as we tread water, but a speedboat makes its way to us rather swiftly.
“Hello there, beautiful girl,” Angelo says as he lowers the ladder for us to get on. “Sorry, I missed you before all of this started.”
I allow her to climb the ladder first, like the gentleman I am. I try not to look at her ass as she climbs the rungs, I am gay after all. But dammit even a gay man can recognize a hot ass, and this girl has got it.
I scold myself internally as I climb up behind her and force my eyes to stay down because I am not the kind of man who objectifies women or men.Or at least that’s what I try to tell myself.
Thankfully, I am distracted from my train of thought as Evie throws herself onto Angelo, grabbing him in a hug.
