I sigh, pinching the bridge of my nose. “What happened?”

“Okay, so Havoc didn’t want me to tell you, but I laughed and basically told him he was an idiot. But, we might need a new place to stay or something.”

“Laney, I’m with the guys, Boris, and Nessa. I’m going to put you on speaker, and I need you to give me the ten seconds or less version of what’s happened.”

I take the phone from my ear and give Alexi my ‘behave’ look before hitting the speaker button. He struggles with Laney’stendency to go on and on. I don’t want to have to put him in his place in front of his father, but I will.

“Alright, what’s going on?”

“Okay, so we were just sitting in the room with Arrow, who’s doing well by the way. The doctors think he will be able to transition to regular foods soon, and he was able to walk a few steps. Huge improvement from just two days ago and…”

“Laney,” I warn.

“Oh, right. So we were just sitting there when a red light went right to Havocs chest. Thankfully, we’ve all been on alert, but a bullet may or may not have shot through the window. Everyone’s okay though.”

“Someone took a shot at Havoc?”

“Yeah, well…,” she scoffs in annoyance. “That’s what I thought too, but does he try to hide like a normal person after that? No. This ignorant sheephead of a man ran out of the building and went hunting for the gunman.”

Tilting my head back, I’m internally hoping like hell she’s not about to tell me she can’t find him because that would be very fucking bad right now.

“He called some of Boris’ team and they were able to find the guy. Turns out Adrik put a hit out on him. Now The Shades and all other types of mercenaries are after him.”

“What?” I abruptly sit up, stunned although I shouldn’t be. The reach of The Shades is fucking huge. If there’s a hit out on Havoc, it won’t be out for long.

“Yeah, so I was thinking maybe we could try to cancel that somehow?”

“Laney, you can’t just cancel a hit.”

Especially with the men I work with. They don’t stop until the prize is claimed.

“I was afraid of that.”

Now it’s Boris who speaks up.

“I will send some armored cars there now. Havoc will be staying with me. So will you. It is not up for discussion.”

“Listen, Boris,” Laney says, sounding much more confident than I’m used to. “You might be the leader of a whole scary ass gang, but you’re not going to order me around. I’ll be staying wherever Arrow is. Not up for discussion.”

Boris closes his eyes and Nessa smiles, but rolls her lips attempting to conceal it.

“If you would have let me finish,” Boris continues, “I was going to say I will set up a room here for Arrow with all of the medical equipment he needs.”

“Can Brittany come too?”

We all look at the phone in confusion.Who the fuck is this girl right now?

“Who’s Brittany?” I ask.

“She’s Arrow’s nurse. Well, at least during the day. She gives Havoc a lot of crap. I really like her.”

“I will send a contract her way,” Boris says.

“Oh, and Ellie too? She’s his physical therapist and the only one who got him to actually walk since she’s so patient with him, and I think if she were there to work with him during the day, he would get so much better…”

Boris cuts her off, clearly done with her ranting. Like father, like son I guess. “Laney.”

“Yes?” She must realize what she was doing now because her voice sounds like a squeak from a mouse.
