“Probably back to his place because he is an idiot.”
He nods his head and hits his radio telling the other guy to back off. “You carrying?”
“Of course,” I snort.
“I’ll get some more guys out there at the house that he’s renting but I’m gonna guess you’re not gonna stay put while we do that.”
I lift a brow. “Would you if she was yours?”
“Not in this lifetime or the next.”
CHAPTER 9
Beth
“Honestly, I really never thought he’d be this damn stupid,” I mutter to myself.
Sometimes I guess you really have no idea how stupid people really are until they show you. Me included.
I’ve been ducking Cannon for the last week. I know I shouldn’t. I don’t even want to. But he terrifies me. I’m falling in love with the man and although he says he’s in it forever…who the hell knows how long forever is sometimes?
Like right now, a few hours feels like forever. I wrench at the ropes tied around my wrists and feel no give at all. Sputtering, I glance around the little room hoping to see a knife or something sharp. But there’s nothing.
Every other room in this place is a mess but this one spare bedroom is stripped of every damn thing that could possibly help me.
Maybe he’s not as dumb as he looks.
I sigh and growl when I remember him coming up behind me in the alley and saying my name. I barely had time to get the pepper spray out before he was throwing some sack over my head and hefting me over his shoulder. His bony, weedy shoulder. He’s nothing like Cannon. Cannon gets me excitedwhen he smirks at me. He’s tossed me over his shoulder and run to the bedroom and butterflies tickle my tummy.
Not this time. I just feel sick.
He left an hour or so ago to pick up something to eat. I guess he meant for himself because he doesn’t seem to be worrying about me at all.
I squirm around on the chair, grimacing. I’ve got to pee so damn bad that it’s not going to be too much longer before I’m embarrassing the hell out of myself.
I hear the door and roll my eyes. “Peachy,” I mutter. Couldn’t be the damn cavalry? Nope.
He pops his head in the door and smiles when he sees me there. “I’m so glad that you’re still here.”
I eye him closely. Is he nuts? It’s not like I can walk out.
He saunters in like a dickhead and plops his ass down in the seat across from me. “I am so happy that you decided to come for a visit. I’ve really been missing you since you’ve been hanging around with my uncle.”
I roll my eyes. “He’s my boyfriend.” Seems a tame name for Cannon Reed but what the hell else can I call him?
Jesse’s puffy face turns red. “He’s not your boyfriend, I am.”
Huffing, I shove back when he sticks his face up in mine. “I don’t think so and if you think that Cannon Reed is going to take this lying down, you’re out of your mind. When he finds out what happened here he’s gonna kick your scrawny ass.”
“Don’t be silly. We’re family.”
“I don’t know what hick branch of the family you’ve been spawned off of, but if you run off with some guy’s girlfriend, even if you are family, some take exception to that. I think Cannon might be one of those.”
He pouts out his bottom lip and if this wasn’t so damn serious, I think I’d laugh at him.
“Let me go and maybe this won’t go as badly as it’s going to if you don’t.”
“I’m not letting you go.”
