“And can you forgive me for making you stay with me?”

“I never wanted to leave.” She pressed her finger on his lips to keep him from saying anything. “I thought I did but when you signed the papers…I realized that I didn’t want to go anywhere. That I loved you. That I couldn’t not love you. I was mad at you, but that didn’t make me love you any less.”

“I…I was afraid to let you choose.” His dark eyes grew glossy with tears, and Alison’s heart broke. “No one has ever chosen me before. Not my mother. Her family or even Merri. I was sure you wouldn’t choose me either.”

“I would.” She kissed him. “I did. I’ll always choose you because I love you. I may get furious with you, but I’ll always love you. I can’t help it.”

“I’m glad to hear you say that because you’re probably going to be mad at me a lot over the next fifty years.” He smiled but his eyes were cautious.

“I bet I am.” She kissed him. “And you’re probably going to get mad at me, and my constant talking is sure to drive you crazy sometimes.”

“Sometimes?” he teased.

“Hey.” She playfully slapped his chest.

“I missed your chatter.” His eyes grew serious. “Don’t ever stop talking to me again–even yelling at me is better than that.”

“I’m going to need that in writing.” She started to sit up.

“I’ll put it in my wedding vows.” He pulled her back down.

“Wedding vows?” She gave him a curious look. “What are you talking about?”

“Marry me, Alison.”

“We are married. We’ll destroy the divorce papers together.”

“I want to marry you again.”

“Again, but—”

“Yes.” He sat up. “I want to start our life together, but I want to do it right this time. No contract. Just you and me.” He took her hand. “So, will you marry me?” His eyes widened. “Ah, shit.”

“What?” She’d been about to cry and accept.

“I’m fucking this up. I should’ve waited and done it right. Take you out for a romantic dinner. Get on my knees. Get dressed up.” He glanced down at his body and smirked. “Or at least get dressed.”

She sat up and kissed him. “Don't you dare.” She trailed her fingers up his thigh, scraping softly with her nails. “This is the most perfect proposal ever. And yes, I'll marry you again even though it seems a little silly.”

“It’s not silly.” He swatted her ass. “I'd like a wedding video that we can show Irene one day. You know, one where my bride doesn’t try to break my nose.”

“Good point.” She laughed. “And don’t worry. That won’t happen again.” She leaned in and kissed him. “Because this time, I won't be nervous about kissing you.”

“Maybe you should be.” His tongue tangled with hers.

“And why is that?” She pulled away, nipping his lower lip.

“Because this time I won’t just be imagining what it’ll be like to fuck you; I’ll know.” He kissed her again and this one was hotter and deeper. “We might end up putting on a show for your family and friends.” His breath teased across her lips. “And let’s not forget the minister and his wife.”

“That might be exactly what we need to make everyone forget our first wedding.” She wrapped her arms around him and kissed him, happier than she’d ever been in her life. She’d found the one place she belonged, in his arms.

CHAPTER 36: Harker

Harker stood in the library holding Irene. Today had been perfect, better than any wedding he could’ve imagined.

Alison had looked even more beautiful than she had the first time they’d gotten married. This time, instead of having her head lowered and muttering, she’d walked toward him, her eyes sparkling with happiness and filled with love. She’d also spent the day by his side and hadn’t gotten drunk.

“Well, it’s time for us to say goodnight.” Estelle reached for the baby.
