“Myles is alive,” an unfamiliar man calls out.

I look over my shoulder.

“But Diaz is dead,” Joseph shares. He stands beside the fallen man, wearing a similar outfit to Declan. In fact, all the men look like they’re members of a covert military team.

“Bound Myles. The police can take him into custody,” Declan orders without a backward glance. His focus remains on me and helping me walk.

I watch the men nod and do as they’re told.

“What about Isaiah?” I ask, then tell Declan of my boss’s involvement in my abduction.

“He’s detained upstairs. He’s the one who told us where Luis took you.”

“And Nolan and Liam?”

His eyes darken. “We’re still searching for them.”

Nausea crawls up my throat. I breathe through my nostrils and force it down as Declan leads me up the stairs and back into the room where Luis told me about his plan to marry me.

A tremor travels through me at the thought of what could’ve happened if he’d gotten his way. I have no doubt my father would’ve found a way to get me out of the marriage, but what I could’ve endured in the meantime will undoubtedly inspire nightmares for many nights to come.

We enter the main lobby. Several of Luis’s men lie on the floor, dead. Others stand with their hands cuffed against the wall, guarded by MacKenzie men.

And Jane.

Declan’s second-in-command looks like a fierce badass as she oversees the detainment of the members of Luis’s organization. Including women who are too thin and watch everything through haunted eyes.

I stop walking.

Declan looks at me with a raised brow.

“There are women here against their will,” I tell him. I can’t find it in me to voice my eldest brother’s involvement in the horrific crime.

Not yet.

“We know. They’re being rounded up as we speak. The police will see to their safety.”

Relief floods me. “Thank God for that.”

“Cat!” Nero appears around the corner leading to the exit of the building. He runs to me. Declan steps away just as my brother wraps me in his arms. “Are you alright?”

“I’m fine.” I return his hug.

He pulls back and looks me up and down. “You look like you were rolling around on a floor. And is that blood?” Alarm laces his tone.

I glance down at my once-white dress and note the dirt and god-knows-what-else staining the delicate material, choosing to ignore the red color staining the fabric. I swallow the lump in my throat and whisper, “I fought back.”

And I killed someone.

“Of course, you did.” Nero squeezes my arms. “You’re a Furnari.”

I swallow back the emotion in my throat and nod. He takes another second to look me up and down before wrapping an arm around my shoulder. “Come on. Let’s get you out of here. Father is worried sick.”

“Father knows where I am?” I look around the room but there’s no sign of my father or his men. Aside from Nero. Though, he’s technically no longer a member of the “family”.

“Father opted to let MacKenzie oversee your rescue,” Nero tells me. “But trust me, he wasn’t happy about it. If Declan didn’t have the commissioner working with him, I’m sure Father would’ve ordered every single member of the family to storm this building to get you out.”

Declan and the commissioner?
