I was too angry with him for hurting Adam; I suppose. And then that was only a one-off clash, where I spent most of my time comforting Mia and not thinking much about the man who hurt him.

But he is hot. Scruff lines the contours of his jaw and chin, making me want to glide my fingertips over and feel the prickle.

What the hell, Taylor!

Answer his question.

“About two minutes ago.”

He nods his head slowly, then looks me up and down.

“You look tired.” That was something I wasn’t expecting him to say.

“I’ve worked a night shift and then spent an extra two hours in the hospital. I have a child to look after the moment I wake up after my measly few hours of sleep. I am tired.”

He hisses, “Then sleep. We’ll talk when you’re awake.”

“Just get it over with.”

“Taylor. Have a shower. Get into bed and sleep and don’t set your alarm.”

“Holly...”

“I’m here.” He gives me a boyish grin that makes my insides flip. “Don’t worry, I’m sure Adam and Mia won’t let me leave with her.”

I let my eyes rake over Oliver before I whisper, “What are you really doing here?” I blow out a breath. “You know you can’t take her from me?”

“But I can be a father to her.”

I nod. “You just know that you are her father. No questions.”

“She’s mine. I know she is. I knew it the moment I saw her after the game last week.” He chews on his bottom lip for a few seconds before looking me in the eye. “Then I saw you. The girl...”

I wait for him to continue the sentence, but when he doesn’t, I don’t push him because I’m not sure that I want to know what he thinks about me. “I thought you were a pilot.” My words come out like a whisper.

He closes his eyes and sighs. “I was coming back to the hotel to tell you the truth.”

“But you didn’t.”

“I did. When I left, the paparazzi had a tip off that four hockey players from the New York Stars were in the sex club and someone tipped them off that I’d bought a girl in the virgin auctions and was at the hotel. We spent an hour drinking in the hotel bar, making it look like that’s all we were there for. When they finally disappeared, I went back to the room, but you’d left.”

I nod. “It made me feel dirty. You fucked me twice and then left me, promising you were getting food and you wanted to talk to me, but...” I shake my head, not wanting to say the words out loud. “Anyway, when I found out I was pregnant, I begged the club for your details, but they refused. Then I searched all the airlines, researched the pilots and tried to find the ones who looked in their twenties with amber eyes.”

“You looked for me?” he asks, surprised.

I nod, taking the envelope from my bag and handing it to him.

“It’s a genealogy test. This was the next step. I was going to try to find her father this way.” I rush out a breath. “I knew it was a long shot.”

He smiles. “You want her to know her father?”

“Only if you promise to be in her life. My father left when I was young, and I’ve never seen him since I was a toddler. I don’t want you abandoning her once the novelty wears off. Or when you meet someone.”

He takes my hand in his, stroking his calloused fingers over my palm. “I promise I won’t abandon either of you ever again.” Our gazes lock and my heart pounds against my ribs. Suddenly, he drops my hand and says, “I let you get some sleep.”

I feel his breath against my neck when I wake. My eyes flash open and I see him staring. “What are you doing in my bed?”

He places his finger over his lips. “Shush. You’ll wake Holly.” He nods his forehead to the crib at the end of my bed.
