“Are you serious?” I ask. “You’ve known me for less than twenty-four hours and...”
“And I already know. I knew it the moment you passed me in the club. I never planned to buy anyone that night. Until you.”
Mom’s eyes land on Oliver the moment he walks into the room. A small smile lifting her lips. “Those eyes can only belong to one person. You have to be Holly’s Daddy.”
“Mom.”
Mom rolls her eyes. “She’s eighteen months old, Taylor. She doesn’t understand what I’m saying.”
“Dada,” Holly says, looking at Oliver, who has tears in his eyes.
“Yes. I’m your Dada, Holly.”
I sigh. This is moving far too fast. “He’s also Adam’s old hockey enemy. Who’d a thought?”
“And the two of you...”
“Have known each other for not one day,” I interrupt before she plans the wedding.
“But we’re planning on getting to know each other again,” Oliver says.
“Are we?” I murmur.
Oliver stares at me. A smile lifts on his face, making my stomach flip at the intensity. “I’m going to spend a few more days here.”
“You can stay at the house,” Mom says. “There’s a spare bedroom.”
“Mom.”
“Be gracious, Taylor.”
Chapter 9
Oliver
I stare at the single bed in the room and smile because Taylor listened to her mom and allowed me to stay at her home.
“This place is nice,” I say. It’s a totally different vibe than my home in New York, but it feels more inviting and comforting. I glance out of the window at the calm sea. “Perfect, in fact.”
“I love living here. I’ll never move away from Hunter Beach.”
She’s testing me. She knows how much playing for the New York Stars means to me. But Hunter Beach is less than a two-hour drive.
I can do that most of the week.
“You own this house now,” I say.
She nods.
“You could get a loan on it and pay for your mom’s medical bill.”
She chews on her lip for a moment. “Do you think the bank would give me one?”
I shrug. “Or I could give you half the money. You save your mom’s life and my daughter has her grandmother in her life.”
Taylor’s eyes widen. “You’d do that?”
“I’d do anything for Holly.” I pause for a moment and watch a single tear roll from her eye. “And you.”
