“I’ve heard of Jax. I think Hakon has met her, so could he set us up?” Lycaon added. “Conor mentioned her.”

Nathaniel shrugged. “Text Hakon or Conor and ask. I won’t be going. I’ll continue to research here and brave the storm when they come back.”

Lycaon grunted and sat on a stool.

Nathaniel shot a look at me. “I’m going to take a look at these bullets. Feel free to take a rest if you need to. There’s a guest room on the first floor. The second floor is out of bounds.”

His voice gruff, Lycaon added, “Let me know if there’s anything I can do to help.”

“Well,” Nathaniel eyed Lycaon, “you can start by getting rid of Adara. That would be great.”

Lycaon nodded. “If you have a phone and Hakon’s number, I can start on that. We really need to find Adara’s leader. I know, well, I killed the last one.”

He avoided saying it was my dad and kept his gaze firmly on Nathaniel.

Shaking his head, Nathaniel disagreed. “I don’t know. Usually with these organisations, the ones on the battlefield are not the real power. Perhaps this Jax will know?”

Barely acknowledging him, Nathaniel passed him his phone from his pocket.

Nathaniel caught Anthony staring at him, a knowing smile before Anthony gasped, his eyes wide. “I’m going to try and find Cerberus. You stay safe, you hear me? I wish you’d come with me.”

He grabbed Nathaniel, who protested, his arms raised with one of the bullets in his finger, warding off Anthony who completely ignored that.

Putting his forehead to Nathaniel’s, Anthony whispered so quietly we couldn’t hear. But Nathaniel blushed.

Pulling away, Anthony shot us a grin. “I’ll catch you all in a bit. Then we’ll blow these bastards up.” Then he was up the stairs and we heard the front door latch click.

Nathaniel sighed, he observed Lycaon who was on the phone, then settled his look on me. “You two, go get some rest. Or, whatever. One thing I’ve learned from today is carpe diem, seize the day. You, we could be dead tomorrow. Just one thing?”

I answered, “Yes?”

“Don’t be loud. I’ve,” he put his hand to his forehead, “I’ve got a headache. If you need anything for your lover’s tryst, it’ll be in the bedside cabinet.”

My jaw dropped.

Shaking his head, Nathaniel narrowed his eyes at me. “Don’t be a prude. You’re screwing a werewolf. Did you see my living room? There’s nothing I haven’t done before. OnlythoseI haven’t done before, and you, honey, aren’t my type. I prefer my women a little more, well, mature. Go on, off with you.”

“No, we should find this Jax!”

As Nathaniel busied himself, I could hear Hakon’s squeal through the phone as Lycaon eventually convinced him to get Jax’s contact details.

Handing Nathaniel’s phone back to him, Lycaon informed us, “Well, Jax isn’t on a mobile. Hakon is calling Austin now, who can contact her. I guess we could go take a rest whilst we wait? I mean, Austin has to perform a spell to find her.”

“I guess so, though I’m so stressed, I’m not sure I can relax.”

Lycaon bent down, kissing my head. “I think I can at least help with that…”

“Really? I wasn’t sure if we were on or off.”

Nathaniel interrupted, “Oh crikey, just go upstairs and get laid. Your sexual tension is killing me. Get out of here, go on!”

I stomped ahead, dragging my tired legs up the stairs with Lycaon behind me.

“Elsa?”As he stepped into the guest room, saw me falter and rushed into me, his huge arms pulling me into him.

Choked, his voice was husky as he said, “I need to do better by you.”

“Are we together Lycaon, because if not, that’s ok. I mean, look, you’re here, then gone, then back again. If you’re not sure, please, for the love of Hecate, back off.”
