“You’re right,” Matty said, unaware his words were turning my world upside down. “That’s something I’ve already learned. Thank you for reminding me.”

He spun around, stalking off into the crowd.

My hand was still in mid-air where I’d been clinging to his shirt.

“That’s something I’ve already learned.”

Someone had hurt my sunshine. Someone had put that haunted look on his face. Someone had done exactly what I’d threated to do.

Taken advantage of his naivety.

Right then, I knew the answer to Matty’s earlier question. The one he’d asked that I’d been so uncertain about.

No. I’d never hurt him.

I couldn’t.

I couldn’t be the reason for that look on his face, but I also knew I was right about everything else too. I wasn’t good for Matty. I wasn’t what he deserved.

I needed to leave. Go somewhere far away and lose myself in Adamanthea and work until Matty’s mortal life was at an end.

But first, I was going to track down the man who’d hurt my sunshine.

And I was going to carve the smile he’d stolen from Matty into every inch of his skin.

“Sebastian?”

River’s voice broke me from my reverie. I cleared my throat, pulling my hand back and reining my temper in. I couldn’t let myself loose now. Not until I knew who I was aiming my fury at. For that, I needed my cousin. “Where’s Toby?”

“Isn’t that the question of the hour.”

I glared at him until he elaborated. “I don’t know what happened, but Blaise took off. Toby has apparently gone after him.”

“And you didn’t? Aren’t twins supposed to be close?”

River gave me a withering look. “We are. Close enough for me to know when to keep my nose out of his business.”

“But Toby has followed him?”

“I assume so. None of us can get hold of him, but he texted Mori that he was going after him. That was two days ago. His phone’s been off since.”

Fucking fabulous. My attention drifted over the dance floor. Matty had his hands in the air again, singing along to whatever monstrosity this song was, Lucky and Ethan at his side.

His smile was still wrong though. Whatever I’d inadvertently reminded him about was painted in the creases around his eyes. I doubted anyone else could tell.

But I could, and it was unacceptable.

I tapped my foot impatiently, considering my options. There was no way River or the others would tell me who’d upset Matty. Assuming they even knew.

Leo would, though. I hadn’t missed the way he and Ferry had hovered protectively over Matty.

I’d put that down to him being younger. Human. Fragile.

Maybe that assumption had been wrong. Maybe there was a more sinister reason.

Whatever it was, I was going to find out.

“You need to stay away from Matty.”
