“Yes. The blue ones.”
Okay. This was good. “Brilliant, sunshine. Whatever happens, do not take your shoes off unless they force you to. There’s a tracker in each of the heels.”
“What?”
“Sunshine, we don’t have time for me to explain right now. There’s a tracker on your phone too, but if they have any intelligence, they won’t let you take it. Keep your shoes on. I’m going to find you, okay? I’ll be with you as soon as possible, and I’m going to save you.”
“But what if they hurt you?”
My sweet, innocent sunshine. Fuck, how I hated the darkness I was about to unleash on his world. “That won’t happen. They’re the ones who need to be afraid, not me.”
“I hear something.” Matty’s voice dropped to a shaky whisper. “Someone’s coming in.”
My software finally opened up, showing Matty’s location in the corner of the campus. “Okay, I have your location. Remember what I said.”
“They can’t get in. The door’s locked.”
Matty’s voice was frantic. I punched my fist into the wall with frustration that I couldn’t stop this happening. “Sunshine, if it’s who I think it is, the lock won’t stop them. But don’t forget what I told you. Repeat it back to me.”
Matty’s voice was barely there. “Keep my shoes on. Do what they say.”
“And I’ll come for you,” I insisted darkly. “Remember that, Matty. I’m coming to get you. Hold on, sunshine. I’m coming.”
He didn’t answer. There was a loud bang followed by the sound of the phone hitting the floor.
What followed next scorched me to the depths of my soul.
“I’ll come with you. No, you don’t need to…”
Matty didn’t finish his sentence. He was too busy screaming.
I tried to disassociate to focus on anything else I could hear. Any other clues they might drop. But the sound of Matty’s pain was ripping me to pieces.
There was a shuffling noise, then heavy breathing came over the line. Before they even spoke, I knew it wasn’t my sunshine.
“Oh, Danny-boy. You thought we wouldn’t find out…but we did.”
I didn’t speak for a second, waiting to see what else they’d give me.
The voice chuckled. “Really? Going to stay silent instead of begging to save your mate?”
They thought Matty was Danny’s mate?
“I’m not the one who needs to beg.” Fury had my accent slipping, my true voice coming out. “Matty is not Danny’s mate. He doesn’t belong to Danny in any shape or form. He’s mine.”
There was a long pause as the soon-to-be-dead supe processed this information. “Oh yeah? And who are you?”
“Sebastian LeClerc. I trust you’ve heard of me.”
Another long silence. This time, I was the one who broke it.
“I see you have. Naturally, this means you’re aware of what I do. What I’m capable of. If you hurt a hair on Matty’s head, I’ll end you in the most painful ways I know.”
Another heartbeat passed before the voice on the other end guffawed. “Look, maybe I’d believe you if Matty wasn’t wearing Danny’s clothes and living with him. Plus, Danny’s scent marked him. Why would he do that if Matty’s not his mate?”
Another hole joined the first in the wall. He scent marked him? What the fuck had Danny been thinking?
I took a deep breath to get myself under control. “I’m telling you now that Matty is mine. Hand him over right now, and I’ll forget all about this.”
