Page 51 of Mystery of Magic

Daryn and I stood in the adjacent tunnel, but the mountain was still quaking from the collapse. We raced toward the exit as pebbles rained down on our shoulders.

The urgency of our escape pressed upon us like a relentless tide, and Daryn and I sprinted through the labyrinthine tunnels in a desperate bid for our lives. The dimly lit passageway stretched endlessly before us, its uneven stone walls seemingly closing in with each step. My heart pounded in my chest, a steady drumbeat of fear and determination that matched the rhythm of our feet on the rough terrain.

Debris and small boulders rained down upon us, like nature itself conspiring to halt our progress. My breaths came quick and shallow, and I could feel the weight of our own mortality bearing down upon us. When a large chunk of rock dislodged from the ceiling and hit my shoulder, I cried out in pain and stumbled forward from the impact.

“We need a shield.”

“Draw from me. I need to focus on our exit,” Daryn said. Ididn’t realize he had been using his magic to discern the quickest route out. We had taken so many twists and turns I had no idea where we were and the landscape seemed to change with each passing second and the mountain rebelled from the intrusion.

With a surge of energy, I summoned my inner power and willed it to manifest into a protective shield. An ethereal barrier formed around us, shimmering with a soft, otherworldly glow. The falling debris struck the shield but harmlessly bounced off, leaving us unscathed. The adrenaline coursing through me only amplified the strength of my magic, as did my connection to Daryn.

The tunnel’s ceiling groaned and shuddered, threatening to collapse upon us at any moment. The very earth seemed to tremble in protest as we neared the exit. Daryn’s face, etched with a mix of concentration and determination, mirrored my own. We had come too far, fought too hard, to be buried beneath tons of unforgiving rock.

The dim, oppressive tunnel seemed endless as we pressed forward, our orb light flickering weakly, casting eerie shadows on the uneven stone walls. Every step echoed with a hollow, foreboding sound, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that time was slipping through our fingers like grains of sand. Daryn and I had come so far, fought against every obstacle, and now, at this critical juncture, we faced a barrier that threatened to extinguish the last glimmer of hope.

“No,” I whispered as we arrived at a blocked section of the tunnel, our path sealed by an avalanche of debris and fallen rocks. The walls of the tunnel had crumbled, a cruel reminder of the earth’s unpredictable wrath. My heart sank like a stone, and a heavy sense of despair settled upon me. The realization of our predicament was like a vice tightening around my chest, squeezing the breath from my lungs.

Fear clawed at the edges of my thoughts, gnawing at myresolve. The thought of being entombed in this forsaken place, with no chance of seeing the light of day again, was suffocating. We had faced countless dangers, but this was different. The heart-wrenching sense of finality gripped me, and I felt an overwhelming sense of helplessness.

Daryn’s gaze met mine, and I could see the same fear reflected in his eyes, though he fought to hide it. We were in this together, bound by our shared quest and the unbreakable bond that had grown between us. In the face of despair, we held onto each other, our hands clasped tightly, our spirits refusing to yield to the darkness.

Daryn’s eyes darted around the enclosed tunnel. “I need to make another exit. There is a side tunnel, but I need access to all your power to feed the spell. When I tell you, drop the protective shield for a moment. Once I release my magic, you can reactivate it.”

There was no time for him to explain what he planned to do, but I trusted my parafinai with my life. “Okay.”

I could feel Daryn siphoning from me, the ebb of power as if it were being drained away like a diverted culvert.

“Now!” he yelled.

I released the shield as debris began to rain down on my shoulders and the white light blasted into the side wall like an enormous laser.

The wall shuddered and collapsed as if it were made of paper mache and Daryn was pulling me through the jagged opening in seconds.

My shield snapped back as soon as we were through, running down a new section of tunnel we hadn’t been in before.

Our frantic footsteps echoed through the ancient tunnel, each beat of our heart matching the urgency of our quest. As we sprinted forward, the air was thick with a sense of foreboding. The very earth seemed to tremble beneath our feet as if it held its own secrets, reluctant to release them to us.

Daryn stopped abruptly. “Wait. What is that?”

It took me a moment to distinguish the rushing sound from that of grating rock. It was a strange gurgling sound, like an underground beast awoken from its slumber. I felt the ground beneath me give way, a terrifying sensation that sent shockwaves of fear coursing through my veins. Water began to seep into the tunnel, slow and insistent, creeping like a relentless adversary.

As the ground beneath us gave way, we splashed through the icy water, our orb light casting eerie ripples on its surface. The once solid ground was now a treacherous path, submerged in three feet of cold, dark water. Every step was a battle against the elements, the chill seeping into our bones and the constant threat of unseen dangers lurking below the liquid surface.

Fear gripped me, not just for the potential perils hidden beneath the water, but for the realization that we were now racing against time and an underground river. Desperation fueled our steps as we waded through the submerged tunnel, our breaths coming in ragged gasps. The knowledge that we might never escape this watery trap clawed at the edges of my mind.

Daryn and I were in this together, and the feeling of reassurance he sent through the bond warmed me like a fire at my core. We pressed on, our soaked clothes clinging to our bodies, our hands gripping each other for support and reassurance.

“We are almost there,” he said, but his whispered encouragement faulted as the tunnel squeezed to a sliver.

The tunnel had grown much narrower, as if the very earth itself conspired to hinder our progress. Daryn and I exchanged a glance, a silent acknowledgment of the challenge that lay before us. Our orb cast a feeble light on the tight passage, and the walls seemed to close in around us, pressing against our shoulders and hips.

We had no choice but to proceed single file, with Daryn leading the way. He followed the orb, disappearing into the crevice of a tunnel as I continued after him.

The stone walls scraped against my body as I inched forward, my breaths shallow, my heart pounding like a drum in the confines of my chest. Every movement was deliberate, every shift of my body a test of endurance.

The sensation of rock against my skin was both unnerving and oddly intimate. It was as if the very earth itself was testing our determination, forcing us to prove our worthiness to proceed. The darkness seemed to press in on us, a relentless weight that threatened to consume our very beings.

Daryn’s presence ahead of me was a source of reassurance, a reminder that we were in this together, bound by our shared purpose and the unbreakable bond that had grown between us. And he was waiting for me when I emerged from the craggy, narrow section. He grabbed my hand as we bolted for the glimmer of light in the distance.
