My two Nephilim were different and yet completely the same. Their body types were slightly different, with Cobalt being beefier and more defined than Lazarus. But they both had black hair and very dark eyes. Cobalt was clean shaveneverywhere, but Laz liked a little scruff on his body. Cobalt was creamy and without a tan, but Laz was darker skinned and smelled of pine all the time.

They were the same height with the same quiet, observant demeanor. Cobalt liked to walk around without a shirt on, but Laz was always dressed in pants and long sleeves with a hat on his head. Even in the summer.

I loved them. Loved their differences. Love their similarities. Loved the warmth in their hands when they touched me, as if they could use their healing power to absorb the heartache in my soul from the absence of our wife and the newest horrors I witnessed last week.

They caught me and sandwiched me between them. But I knew right away that they hadn’t found our wife. I tried not tosigh in frustration. Instead, I tried to just focus on the fact that they were home, safe and without any new scars.

“Good news,” Lazarus said. I stilled, my eyes opened. I held my breath. “They’re working on getting the foster program up and running.”

I huffed. Sure, that was great news. Not the news I cared about right now.

“Strange news?” Cobalt said, and I looked up at him. “Tyrus has become obsessed with a newborn.”

“What?” I asked, startled.

He chuckled. “It’s fucking wild. I’ve never seen him so… focused on a single being.”

“How does the mother feel about that?” I had a moment’s sappy thought that maybe the mother was their wife. How serendipitous. Nowthat’sa story. Well… maybe not. It’s actually truly horrendous.

Cobalt frowned and shook his head. “She’s the woman you brought in the other night and as far as she’s concerned, she wants nothing to do with the baby.”

Part of me was sad about it, and yet, I kind of understood. I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about the child if I’d been in her position.

“Apparently, Iker has been allowing him to visit the child daily, but is refusing to allow Tyrus to bring him home,” Lazarus said.

“Has Iker met the baby?” I asked.

“Nope. I think they’ll be bringing him home if the rest of the family meets him,” Cobalt said with a smirk.

“That’s… cute.” It was cute, right?

Cobalt touched my chin and lifted my face to his. His smile was soft. “Patience, angel. Our wife will come for us.”

“Maybe we need to not wait for her and go find her,” I suggested.

Lazarus leaned in closer, pressing his lips to my ear. “Honey,we believe you.” My heart rate picked up. “We believe you found her. We could feel her too.”

I swallowed and stared at Cobalt. His smile widened a little as he nodded slightly.

“But we still need to wait for her. When she’s ready, she’ll find us. We’ll just keep making ourselves available and present. Okay?” Lazarus said.

“How? They won’t let me back.”

He chuckled. “Your exuberance was a little overwhelming, Toby. But we’ll visit often. There’s lots of work for Nephilim to do at Haven. And when we find her, I promise, we’ll bring her home.”

That had to be enough. I nodded. “Okay. Maybe they’ll believe me now that you do.”

“We always believed you,” Cobalt said. He brushed my cheek with the soft pad of his thumb. My eyes fluttered. “But sometimes, you just have to let the world work around you and when the right moment comes, you’ll know. It’s not time yet. Our goddess is probably a very vital part of Haven, otherwise you’d probably have run into her again. Just be patient.”

I huffed but nodded. Patience. I was growing to hate that word.

“Let’s go see if our househusband wants to cook for us in the nude,” Lazarus said.

I grinned.

“Aden, darling,” Cobalt called as he pecked my lips. “Feel like getting naked?”
