“Sweetheart, did I wake you?” Luka purrs.

“It’s fine. I was dreaming about you anyway,” she responds.

No, Gemma! Get away from him!

I begin to cry, and Luka holds his finger to his lips again, glaring at me. “I just wanted to call and say hello. I miss you so very much.”

“When will you be home?” she asks sweetly.

I’ve never wished for the gift of telepathy more than at this moment.

“In a few days. It just depends if the problem we encountered becomes a bigger issue or not. If it cooperates, I should be home by Friday.”

“Okay, baby. Let’s hope it cooperates, then. I love you.”

Love? Seriously, Gem?!

“I love you too, sweetheart. Talk soon.”

Pushing a button, he pockets his phone and gives me a smug look. “So?” Luka asks, his voice smooth and confident.

“If you hurt her, I will kill you,” I grit out.

He tilts his head and steps closer to me, trailing a hand down my leg. I shake at his touch, recoiling as much as I can. He just chuckles, roving his finger to the space between my thighs.

“I could have fun with you two,” he adds, his expression dark. “If you don’t cooperate, I mean. She has no idea about this life of yours, yes? It might be fun to bring her here. To show her what a murderous little bitch you’ve become.”

Okay, so he does know I killed Armin. That’s not great.

I bare my teeth at him. If I could kick him in the nuts, I would. Smash his face in.

I thought I hated the Lords…

I was wrong.

Thishate goes so much deeper.

“You keep saying I need to cooperate, but I don’t know what you mean.”

He walks around to the foot of the bed, contemplating his answer for a few seconds. “The Lords will come for you. They are already on their way, as a matter of fact.”

My heart twists at his words, and something akin to hope fills me.

I thought for sure they wouldn’t bother, but they’re on their way.

They’re coming for me.

I close my eyes as more tears threaten to spill out from the inner corners.

We’d lay our lives down for you, Harlow. In time, you’ll feel the same way about us.

Gideon’s words from last week float through my mind.

“And?” I snap back, letting the tears fall freely now.

Luka’s eyes narrow as he continues. “Let them find you. Let them come here. But it will be a trap, one to lure them in. We will kill them, and you will join Acadia. Or not,” he adds with a sickening smile. “If you choose not to, we can always kill you.”

I sniff.
