The fact that he’s not even looking at Harlow… the control it must take for him to appear unfazed…

I admire the hell out of him.

“We will take very good care of her,” Jurgen says smugly, lying through his teeth.

Alaric’s expression doesn’t falter, and he doesn’t look at Harlow.

“Kristoff, please escort the Lords out of the building.”

Theo’s jaw rolls as he stands, looking at Jurgen, but he doesn’t say anything either. None of us do. If we show our hand too early, everything will go awry.

Theo cocks his head. “I wish I could say it was a pleasure,” he grits out.

Gideon stands next, his dark blue eyes glittering with rage. Like Alaric and I, though, he stays quiet.

I can say for certain that we’ve undergone much more complex missions in the past, but this is the first time for all of us that the stakes are so high. I’m a second away from blowing our entire cover just so we don’t have to watch Jurgen’s fingers maim our little monster.

She is ours.

Harlow sobs, and real tears fall from her eyes. “Please don’t leave me with them.” She thrashes against Jurgen. “I promise to be better.”

Gideon walks over to her and kisses her gently on the lips. His lips form a thin line as he shrugs.

“Sorry, baby. Sometimes life’s not fair. We have to maintain our order over everything else.”

“I am a part of your fucking order!” she screams, her eyes black with fury.

I shake my head and smirk. “You were. We’ll find someone else. You’re not worth the trouble.”

Turning, I walk away with Kristoff and Alaric. Theo and Gideon follow us closely. I move my hand to the gun tucked against my back, watching as Alaric does the same thing. Kristoff pushes the door open, walking through it before us, strutting onto the sidewalk like a man who just won the war.

I nearly laugh.

Cardinal rule number one: Never turn your back on your enemy.

As the restaurant doors close behind us, Kristoff chuckles and begins to turn around.

Alaric shoots him in the head before he can say a word. My eyes scan the area, but it’s clear of people. Thanks to the silencer and special bullet, there’s no noise and hardly any splatter. Still, since we’re in a public area, Alaric places a cap over his head and hoists him up, like he’s carrying a friend who passed out at the pub. One block later, we all clamber into Monty’s van.

Monty doesn’t bat an eye as he clicks through to the camera on Harlow’s hand. There’s movement, but we can’t make anything out.

“Turn the volume up,” I order Monty.

He does, and we’re all silent as we wait for Harlow to complete the mission.

Our Lady is about to take everyone the fuck out.

She is ours.

CHAPTERTWENTY-FOUR

Harlow

I haveto curl my fists at my sides to keep my hands from shaking. The guys are gone, and now it’s just me and this vile man.

Jurgen.

Why are these Acadian members all so awful?
