He takes his hand off his hip and looks back at the front door of the cabin. “I told you I’m not interested.”

“Oh, you’re Adam. Great. I’m just asking for a few minutes of your time.”

He turns toward the house, and I see a man exit the front door, pull his jacket up around his neck, and walk slowly to the mailbox.

“That must be the madam,” I whisper, leaning in close to her ear.

She pushes my face away. “He isn’t a madam.”

“How do you know?”

She rolls her eyes. “I think I know what a madam looks like.”

“Oh, do you? In all your male hooker experience, you knowa madam when you see one?” I lean in and whisper scream, “You didn’t think he was going to shoot us either and he just said he was going to shoot us. I don’t trust your judgment.”

She pushes my face away and swats me again. “Will you shut up?”

“Will you both shut up?” We jump when the harsh voice breaks up our whisper fight. I lean down to see his face outside Cassie’s window and he rubs a hand over his hardened features and sighs. “Look, if I agree to meet with you, will you leave? I’m at work right now and this is highly inappropriate.”

I snort. “I bet there’s all kinds of inappropriate going on in there.”

Cassie gives me a look that saysif you mess this up for me, I’m leaving you outside Dick Cabin to find your own way home.

Rolling my eyes, I mime locking my mouth and throwing away the key.

Cassie pulls out a business card and hands it through the window. “We’ll be in town until tomorrow. A few minutes is all I ask.”

He eyes the man on the porch and stuffs the card in his jacket pocket. “I’ll text you when I get off work. Now please leave before you get me fired.”

“Of course.” She puts the car in reverse. “So sorry to bother you at work.”

He walks away shaking his head, and the man on the porch waits until Adam throws up a hand signal before he nods, but hovers on the porch.

“These are highly trained whores. I mean, if Adam is only security that would make sense, but with that face and body, I bet he really rakes in the cash for anyone with a spy fetish.”

Cassie speaks over her shoulder as she backs out. “Are you sure this is a sex getaway cabin? That was very aggressive for someone pulling in the driveway of a supposed brothel. If theytreated potential customers the way they treated us, they wouldn’t have a business.”

“Unless they’re really that good they have to turn women away and threaten them with guns.”

She clicks her tongue. “I guess they don’t call it Dick Cabin for nothing.”

“Cassie, we call it that. No one else calls it Dick Cabin.”

“They could, you don’t know.”

“We can’t keep doing this.”

SEVENTEEN

HUNGRY HUNGRY HOOKERS

“Doyou think that Kylo guy owns this place too? I mean…Bent Rods?” I look around the diner and eye the patrons. No one seems like a hooker, or bent. “Not like that would be something to advertise, I mean, there’s nothing wrong with that; curved rods, or straight, it shouldn’t matter. I’m not discriminating—”

“Ella, this is a fishing town, on a lake. It’s referring to bent fishing rods.”

“Ohhh. That explains theHappy Hookerwe passed on the way in. I figured this guy owned half the town and was really capitalizing on the industry. Fishing,” I snap my fingers and point at her, “yes, that makes more sense.”

Cassie drops her menu and studies my face. “Are you okay? You seem frazzled.”
