Did I make the climb harder by attempting it by myself?

Maybe.

Probably.

But I was met near the top with everything I need and I’m ready to sprint to the summit.

I push my glasses up to rest on my head and shove the pencil in the bun piled on top. A knock startles me and I walk slowly to the door. I pull it open and find Luca leaning on the wall on the opposite side of the hallway. Although I got home in the early afternoon, I texted Enzo and told him I would be back to work tomorrow. I needed a day to myself.

I glance down at my watch and smile when I realize I spent most of the day productive, andhappy.

He throws up a hand and gestures to the door. “Did you even look through the peephole?”

And superdick is here to ruin it.

The name fits in more ways than one.

“I can’t see through it.” I close the door halfway to look at the height of the peephole and immediately regret it when Luca tries to hide his grin as I realize the peephole is in fact functional and therefore can be seen on both sides of the door.Smooth. “It’s too tall for me.”

Nice save.

“Get a stool.”

“Why? No one knows I’m here.”

He points a finger at me. “Exactly.”

I look both ways down the hall. “But no one’s coming here looking for me.”

“Right. That’s my point.”

“So why do I need to look if no one knows I’m here?”

“Because no one knows you’re here,” he says.

“So, no one’s coming.”

“Yes, exactly.”

“So why do I need to look?”

“Because no one knows you're here.”

“That doesn’t make any sense. If no one knows I’m here, and no one’s coming, why do I need to look?” I say, exasperated.

“Because if no one knows you’re here, and someone does come, like me, right now, you need to look.”

“But you’re the only one that knows I’m here.”

“Exactly.”

I scoff. “So, you're the only one that would come.”

He fists his hands in his hair. “Which is why you should look. What if it’s not me next time?”

I close my eyes and shake my head. “I think my brains just blew out the back of my head.”

“Just look through the peephole.”
