She pouted, shaking her head.
“I can’t tell you if things are moving too fast for you, what do you think?” she whispered and I bit the inside of my cheek, thinking of how I felt about the situation.
“I like the attention I’m getting from him, I like spending time with him, and I really enjoy how he’s chasing me,” I admitted honestly, feeling my cheeks warm up.
“There you go,” she whispered. “Is that all it is for you? The thrill of the chase because the roles are reversed now and you’re the one being chased?”
It was a great question. However, I did not know how to answer it just yet.Perhaps that’s all it was for me and I just didn’t want to admit it yet.
“You can’t answer it?” she asked softly and I nodded suddenly feeling bad. Well, it wasn’t as if Nate had told me what he wanted from me either.
“Maybe we’ll figure it out together?” I whispered and she gave me a small smile, nodding. She was hesitant about it as well.
I picked up my phone from the table, it had been vibrating for a while and I was ignoring it.
“What the fuck?” I murmured as I looked at the string of text messages that had been sent for the last ten minutes.
“What is it?” she giggled as she grabbed my phone from my hand, her eyes quickly scanning through the messages. “Girl, if you do not run to that man right now before he leaves!”
I covered my mouth as I got up, looking around the living room for a jacket, but I couldn’t find any. My fluffy pajamas would have to do the trick. Hopefully, it wasn’t freezing cold outside.
“Why do you seem shocked?” she giggled as she passed me my phone and I stared at the message again.
Nate:If you don’t come out in the next five minutes, I’ll have to leave and I’ll be really sad that I didn’t get to see you after I came this whole way.
It was sent a few minutes ago and I went through the other messages where he said he arrived at my apartment complex and that he was waiting for me downstairs because he badly wanted to see me.
“Avery?” she called my name and I looked up from my phone, ignoring the butterflies in my stomach as I thought about Nate.
“He’s supposed to be at the training camp right now,” I laughed, finding it hard to believe that he was here.
“Well, he must’ve really wanted to see you, didn’t he?” My cheeks were starting to hurt as I rushed to the door. She giggled as I opened the door, and said, “It seems like he isn’t the only one.”
Fuck.
Chapter 12
Nate
I waited in the reception of her apartment for over thirty minutes and I was starting to get nervous that she would never show. I sent her the last text and hoped to God that she would read this one and respond soon.
The security guard watched me closely and I gave him a weak smile as I looked outside the glass doors, watching as the snow slightly filled up the streets, but it wouldn’t be bad if I left soon, hopefully after seeing Avery.
I tugged on my scarf that was wrapped around my neck, counting the seconds from when I sent her the text. I walked over to the reception desk and asked for the umpteenth time, and I could tell he was getting annoyed with me.
“Can’t you call her?”
“Once again. sir, no. I cannot. Did you try to contact her?” he asked slowly and I wasn’t sure what was more annoying, his tone or the way he talked slowly.
“Once again, she is not responding. Something might be wrong. you know?”
“It’s highly unlikely. Perhaps it’s a hint.” He smiled smugly and I frowned as I looked him up and down behind that desk.
“A hint might be highly unlikely,” I responded as I rolled my eyes moving away from the desk. “Are you as slow as you talk?” I grumbled under my breath and he tilted his head to the side.
“Excuse me, what di?—“
“Nate!” Her warm voice brought me out of the deadly stare-off contest I was about to have with the receptionist and I coyly raised my middle finger at him as I opened my arms out wide for her, opening my jacket as well.
