Who is this girl crying in my cornfield?
At first, it annoys me because nobody forces them to get lost in the maze.
Certainly not me.
They do it of their own free will. And yet, every single year, someone ends up breaking down or calling the cops or blaming me for things I have no control over.
Like how my cornfield looks … which is, exactly like … a freaking cornfield!
Then, the girl looks up at me, eyes wide with fear and frustration, and it’s as if the ground underneath me disappears and swallows me whole.
My lungs seize, my breath catches in my throat, my heart beats wildly as if it’s trying to rip out of its cage. I barely have time to untangle my chaotic thoughts and emotions before she hurls herself at me like I’m her lifeline.
Who is this girl in my cornfield?
The world slides to a stop around us.
I feel her for the first time, and it feels like … coming home!
