His lips were a hungry fire against the wild thump of my heart. We were very young and he was the son of my father’s housekeeper, but we didn’t care.

We knew without a doubt that we’d found our other half. No one could ever split us. What we had was forever. In my dreams I already encountered the grandchildren we would have.

Then my father calls us to his library and breaks the news.

The one thing we never saw coming.

We are half brother and sister.

Devastated and furious, Max storms away from the library never to return.

Years pass, and somehow, I muddle along and become a children’s book illustrator, but the joy of life has been sucked out of me forever.

I dress in drab clothes, never wear make-up, or go out much. I guess I fit the bill to be a spinster for life. Until the day my father makes a shocking confession on his deathbed.

He had lied.

Max and I are not related at all.

I know Max will come for the funeral, but Max is now rich and famous… and he is married with a son.
