Chapter Fourteen
Yeo dug into his plate of biscuits and gravy. “I told you these were the best biscuits,” he said around his mouth full of food. They were on the way home but had stopped for breakfast at his favorite diner outside of Nashville. Dean and his boys didn’t have a lot of belongings, just the basics and their pets, so it hadn’t taken them long to pack.
Gramps and Grammy were running behind, thought, so they were waiting on them before going further. Grammy had called to tell Yeo that they had to go back for something at Mr. Chris’ house. No one was heartbroken at the chance to eat a yummy breakfast.
“This gravy is different then yours, Yeo,” Bennett said, stuffing another bite in his mouth. “It’s so good.”
“It’s cowboy gravy,” the waitress said. “It uses hamburger meat instead of sausage.”
“Cowboy gravy? I have a cowboy,” Bennett said happily. “I need this recipe.”
Yeo giggled at Bennett, then eyed Caden out of the corner of his eye. His alpha talked with Carter about turning the attic into a room for Jimmy. It didn’t sound like it would be too hard and the two men were adorable with their heads close together, planning away. Jimmy and Summer were in a similar position, planning their comic book. Yeo’s brother really did look just like him, but with hot pink streaks through his black hair. He sent Yeo a shy smile when he caught him watching them. Hannah was busy entertaining Jake and Jules while Justin, Tanner, and Juan talked with Jackson.
“What do you make of that?” Bennett kept his voice low and nodded toward Yeo’s papa and Ray. They sat next to each other on the other end of the table. Yeo knew Dean was nervous about being in public. He let his long, black hair fall into his face and at first had kept his eyes on the table. Ray didn’t seem to like that. He’d held his chair for him when they came in and kept telling stupid jokes to make Dean laugh.
“What two letters in the alphabet are always jealous?” Ray leaned toward Dean and put an extra piece of bacon on his plate.
Dean looked at the beta, eyes exasperated. “You are so silly.” He picked up the bacon and bit into it. “Well? What two letters are always jealous?”
“NV,” Ray said with relish. Dean giggled, dark eyes lighting up. He startled at the sound coming from his lips, looking shocked. Yeo didn’t think his papa got the chance to laugh very often.
“Well?” Bennett leaned close to Yeo. “Ray’s a good guy, but I’d swear he was flirting, not just helping a friend relax.”
“I don’t know,” Yeo said, thoughtfully. “I don’t know Papa well enough yet to be able to tell.” His phone pinged with a text and he read through it. “Papa, Grammy and Gramps want to talk to you and me outside.” He grabbed Caden’s hand. “We’ll be right back. Will you order them some breakfast. Grammy said they weren’t picky.”
“Of course, angel,” Caden said, kissing him gently. “Do you want me to come with you?”
Yeo shook his head. “We’ll be fine, baby. Keep planning Jimmy’s dream room.”
Yeo and Dean walked outside the tiny diner and headed for Gramps and Grammy’s truck. The older couple stood beside the trailer carrying two of the horses and a some of the smaller animals. They looked concerned.
“Hey,” Yeo said. “Are you all alright?”
“We left our number with your neighbor when we first left with everyone else,” Grammy said. “He called us about an hour out with some troubling news. We went back, but things are a bit complicated.”
“What’s wrong?” Dean grabbed Yeo’s hand. “We can go with Yeo, right?”
“You definitely can,” Gramps said. “We’re taking you home and you’ll love it. There’s no question of that.”
“The problem is with your dead husband,” Grammy said. “That man doesn’t deserve to be called an alpha. He doesn’t deserve to be called a man.”
“What did he do?” Yeo squeezed his papa’s hand. Whatever it was, they were together now. They could handle anything.
“You know he was cheating on you, right?” Gramps’ eyes were sympathetic and pissed off both.
“Yes,” Dean said in a small voice. “All my boys are omegas, and I can’t have anymore babies. Jules’ birth was really hard.”
“He wanted an alpha,” Grammy said.
“My boys are perfect,” Dean said. “Alpha, omega, beta – it doesn’t matter.”
“You’re right,” Gramps said. “There are weak and horrible people of all genders and designations.”
“What did he do?” Dean looked so sad.
“He caught a young omega alone and raped him,” Gramps said bluntly.
“No.” Dean shook his head, face full of horror and pain.
