“Huh?”
“Will you? We spend every night together as it is. I think it’s time to make it official, don’t you?”
“I’m sorry. Huh?”
“What don’t you get?”
“What are you asking me? To be your… roommate?”
“Not just a roommate. I don’t plan on us sleeping in separate rooms,” he says, grinning. He holds the key up in front of my face like he’s holding a prize. I’m utterly confused. This cannot be what he was planning to ask me. Can it?
I thought he was going to ask me to marry him, not be his live-in! I mean, yes, we practically live together and that’s great. I love it and want to live with him, but… I thought.
Crap.
I really thought he was going to ask me to marry him.
“Chloe? Will you?”
I suck up my tears and try for a happy face, wiping the snot under my nose like a lady. I want to roll my eyes. Instead, I snatch the key out of his hand and mutter, “Sure.”
“Well you don’t have to be so excited about it.”
I glare at him. I can’t help it. It’s been a seriously emotional few hours from finding out Liv was in labor, which was progressing quite quickly, and now this. My pregnant brain can only handle so much and this just might tip me over the edge.
“We’re practically living together already!”
“Yeah, so? Let’s make it official. Look at the key. I had it specially made.”
I let out a heavy sigh and look at the shiny gold key.
Look up at Rex then look down at it again.
Etched into the metal are the letters: M A R R Y M E
And his finger is tracing the letters on my thigh. His eyes hold so much love. A bit of humor, too, because he totally got me.
“Chloe, I have another question to ask you.”
“What is it?” I whisper, holding the key in my hand so tightly its edges are digging into my palm.
“Will you marry me? Be my wife? Make me the even more luckiest man that ever lived?”
“Yes!” I shout, falling into him, wrapping my arms around his neck and holding on tight, peppering kisses all over his face. Pulling back, I frame his face and let my emotions flood out of me when I whisper, “Yes, I’ll marry you.”
“Yeah? You sure? You have one second to change your mind because once I put this ring on your finger, it’s staying there for life.”
My laugh is watery as I nod my head. “I’m sure.”
“Can I put this on you, then?” He lifts a ring between us, holding it with his thumb and forefinger. The band is platinum and there are diamonds. That’s all I see through my tears. With a shaky hand, he slides it over my trembling finger, kisses the back of my hand then stands up, pulling me with him. He takes my face in his hands and I lift up on tip toes. Our lips meet in a rushed and heated kiss that carries me away. It doesn’t matter where we are, all I know is Rex asked me to marry him and I said yes.
A throat clears behind us and I slowly lower myself and spin around to face Paul.
“I take it she said yes?”
“You knew? He knew?!” I ask Rex.
“I asked Ethan this morning, actually. When I was at The Goat, we got the call that Liv was in labor. I called Paul to let him know about Liv and asked him too.”
