“Yup.”
A giggle flies out of my mouth. I quickly cover my mouth and nose to hide the fact that I just snotted all over. “And not at all cocky.”
“Confident,” he corrects. “Wanna take it for a spin?” he asks, dangling the keys in front of me.
I don’t hesitate before I snatch them out of his hand and climb behind the steering wheel. The leather is soft and smooth under my hand, the steering wheel velvety in my grip. And, the interior doesn’t smell like cheese. Instead, the glorious scent of new car and Rex fills my senses.
“How’s it feel?”
“Perfect. My gosh, Rex, this is a sexy car.”
“Yeah,” he agrees, looking around into the back seat then back at me. “You look fucking hot behind the wheel, too.”
I fluff my hair, preening under his words of appreciation. He’s so good for my ego. “Why thank you, sir.”
“Ready to see what she can do?”
“Boy, am I.”
He presses a button above our heads and the garage door slides open. I crank the engine, feeling the power under me. It purrs and I give back to it, shimmying in my seat a little bit to let it know how much I love it and will care for it.
“You two need a minute alone?” Rex asks, heated, teasing, voice so low and oh my gosh I’m getting turned on. Again.
“Nah. I think we’re good now, aren’t we?” I croon as I caress the dashboard.
He chuckles and I put the car in reverse, slowly making my way outside the safety of his two-car garage.
“Where are we headed?”
“Anywhere you want. I’ve got nowhere to be,” he says. His leg is propped against the door frame, wrist draped over his knee. The picture of relaxation in a black hoodie, pair of jeans, and black Converse.
“No work at The Flying Goat tonight?”
“Nope. I’m stepping back a little on hours. There are a couple bartenders looking for more shifts and, well, I like having my nights free.”
For me. I hope. Maybe I’ll be adjusting my hours at the salon, too. Who knows. “Well, then, let’s go for a ride.”
Chapter Seventeen
Rex
“Question.”
“Answer.”
“My boss is planning a big Halloween party at The Flying Goat in a couple weeks. Well, actually, his wife is, but I wondered if you’d want to help with something? I know that means you’d have to meet my friends, but it’s been a month and I’m ready, if you are, I mean.”
“You want me to meet your friends?”
“I do.”
A month ago, all I wanted out of life was easy and uncomplicated. Nothing but between the sheets action. And until I laid eyes on Chloe, it was working just fine. But now, I want complicated, even though being with Chloe is hardly that. But I want the way she shakes up my life, the difference in how I see the world because of her influence on me. I’m seeing things differently, opening my mind and heart up to the one thing I swore I’d never do again.
Fall in love.
Not that I’m in love with her, but I see the potential of it happening. And unless my instincts are way off, she’s along for the ride.
“Wow. You must really like me, huh?”
