Chapter Four
Kinsley
"Not sure."
Holding in a scream of frustration at yet another two-word answer to an open-ended question, I blow out a deep breath and refrain from pulling my hair out. Pasting on what I am sure is a brittle smile, I press the stop button on my recorder. I am almost positive he is not being difficult on purpose and this is his normal personality, but it is like pulling teeth to get answers out of this surly but stupidly handsome man.
I don't know what it is about these mountains, but all the men I have met so far are drool worthy, panty melting hot.
"How about we take a break?"
Liam shrugs, "Okay."
"Do you mind if I take a walk around the yard and stretch my legs?"
Again with the shrug, "Nope."
Stifling the laugh threatening to escape, I step down off the porch. The old lab heaves himself up from where he had ploppedat my feet while we had been talking, following me. He sure is a sweet thing.
I wander around the extensive cleared area that is the backyard littered with logs, chunks of wood of various sizes staged in different ways. Some are in piles, some anchored vertically, standing on end, and one suspended a foot off the ground horizontally. My mind whirs as I contemplate how these are used.
Usually, I am much more prepared for interviews and have done my research, but this one was dumped on me at the last minute. I'm pretty sure my new boss is looking for a reason to let me go. He is looking to change the direction of our content and doesn't love the heartwarming human interest stories for which I am known. He implied I would need to nail this interview to keep my job.
The thought of losing the position I love has me fighting to find the positive in this situation, something I always strive for. I find it makes life not necessarily easier, but it's much harder to be sad or upset when you are always looking at the bright side of things.
So what are the positives of this interview? Well, first off, I get to spend some time with an insanely good looking man who has muscles for days, his biceps almost as big as his powerful thighs attached to a thick barrel chest. When I first laid eyes on him, my knees nearly buckled as I practically panted just at the sight of him.
My pussy pulses and nipples tighten at the thought of what it would be like to be manhandled by him, because there is no doubt he would be capable of throwing me around, even with my extra weight. The smell of pine, wood chips, a hit of oil, and male musk cling to him. It's all I can do to keep my eyes from rolling back in my head when I get a lungful of scents I would have never considered enticing before Liam.
Groaning at the direction my thoughts have taken, I remind myself of where I was originally going with this. I'm looking for the positives of this assignment. I get to travel to a new place and see some beautiful country I have never been to before. This is one of my favorite things about my job. Maybe we can get this interview wrapped up early and I can explore the small town of Coyote Creek near here. It was adorable on my drive through and where the Bed and Breakfast I am going to stay at is located.
What else? I glance around at the yard. Oh yes, I am learning something new, immersing myself into something I know nothing about. Who knew you could professionally compete as a lumberjack? I certainly did not. I perk up at the thought. Smiling because I know how to get this interview back on track.
Bolstered by my idea and feeling more like my positive self, I hoof it back to the porch; the lab following in my wake. I stop short when Liam is nowhere in sight. I hesitantly knock on the slider into the cabin. Hearing a muffled, "Come in," I slide the door open.
My stomach lets out an audible rumble at the scent of food. I feel my cheeks heat as Liam looks my way at the noise.
"Figured you might be hungry. It's getting late." He says gruffly.
I'm thrown both by this man cooking and by the realization of how late it has gotten. "Well, that was awful nice of you. You didn't need to go through all this trouble."
"No trouble." He grunts as his shoulders rise and fall.
I have to bite my lip to keep from bursting into laughter at his unsurprising and customary response. "Well, I was going to ask you to demonstrate the events you do, but by the time we finish eating, it'll probably be too late. I'll need to head back to town so I don't have to make the drive in the dark. I got lost coming up here as it was, and which was why I was following Cooper here."
His brows pinch as he studies me, then completely throws me for a loop when he says. "You should just stay here."
Chapter Five
Liam
The words leave my mouth of their own volition. Shocking me as much as I'm sure they shock Kinsley by the way her eyes widen and jaw drops.
"Oh um, that is very generous of you but I couldn't impose," comes her hesitant reply
"It would give you more time for the interview and be safer than driving back and forth." I hastily add. "I have a guest room."
She blinks slowly, and those pink lips rub together as she processes the suggestion. "Well, I guess it would be nice not to have to worry about getting lost again, and I am on a deadline. If you're sure it's not a problem."
