I glanced at the alarm.

Four in the damn morning, I had been lying in bed tossing and turning over him for four fucking hours.

“You’re gonna see this woman.” I told him, despite our distance. “You’re gonna see me bright and early, Lennox Zade.”

Chapter Eighteen

The Past Creeps Up

Menace

I was standing at the bars listening to Kevin interrogate Ellen Sue when the alarm went off.

“What the fuck…?” I mumbled.

“Goddamn it,” Travis sounded off from his cell.

A series of similar curses rang out as the guards rushed inside and Kevin was promptly returned to his cell.

“What them assholes down in gen pop did now?” Kevin complained as the cell door was locked behind him.

“Wasn’t the general population, Kev.” Larissa laughed, as she stepped onto the unit.

“Well, whatever it is, I don’t think it’s funny,” he grumbled.

“It isn’t. I’m sure the guards who actually graze off the snack bar in the employee lounge find it even less so than you and I.” She snorted and stepped over toward my cell door.

Her blue eyes bugged like she was about to let me in on the world’s juiciest secret.

“You know, how we have a tendency to let the ones who are trusted, processed and sentenced to county time already do chores and help out?”

I shrugged, having never been so well behaved to have been extended such a privilege. “I guess…”

“Well, they just caught one of those boys stroking his dick with a handful of candy, he was apparently dumping it back into the bowl and trading handfuls every few strokes to spread the love.”

I grimaced, though inwardly, I high-fived the bastard's creativity.

Larissa giggled, “I’m so glad I don’t snack at work and bring my own lunch.”

Her hand settled over mine where it was wrapped around the bars, and I stared at it a moment before shifting my attention back to those blue eyes.

She winked and handed me a letter, “They can’t help you in here, but…” she whispered, almost under her breath.

“I’ll keep that in mind.” I forced a smile for her and slid the letter out of the envelope without looking down at it.

“Do that, handsome.” She looked me up and down before sauntering toward the unit doors again.

I couldn’t keep the scowl off my face, so I quickly turned and headed toward the window to be alone with Sammy and my thoughts.

Menace,

I know you said to forget about you, but I can’t.

“What the fuck–?” I stopped reading and flipped the envelope over in search of a name.

I didn’t realize a name could make your stomach drop to your asshole, but that one did.

Oh, that one definitely did.
