Rohan didn’t want him. Why would he? He loved his own omega—yet the sound in the alpha’s voice tore at him. And made him feel even more lonely and unwanted than he’d felt before the meeting. “Are you prepared for me to break his heart and not give him the child he wants so desperately?”

From the corner of Gray’s stare, he could see Rohan’s jaw clench. “I’ve told him I don’t need a child… I’ve told him that he’s enough. He won’t listen.” The alpha released a sigh. “We just got through one hell and now this?” The alpha shook his head. “If you say no to his demand… he’ll give in. He wants this child. He’ll accept your terms, I know it.”

“It’s only been a few weeks since I met Jamie, I know, but he and I…” Gray paused, tears coming to his eyes. “He’s special… your omega. Even in the face of tragedy and illness, he has a light… a fire inside him that you just can’t look away from. I barely know him, but at the same time, I feel like I’ve always known him.”

Gray could hear the smile in Rohan’s response. “Heisspecial. You should’ve seen him before the cancer. A wild, free spirit…” Rohan sighed. “Hopefully he’ll soon be back to his old self. So we can get back to beingusagain. Theusbefore we had to think about death and dying.”

He lifted his stare to finally meet Rohan’s. It was obvious the alpha was deeply in love. “He wants new life to hold close. He’s told me as much. New life to breathe fresh air into his that was touched by death. I can understand this last request… after all he’s been through. His life has hung in the balance, in the hands of doctors. He doesn’t want this new life to be touched by that, too. I don’t know that I can take that hope away from him. Not without guilt eating me alive.”

Lies… that’s not the only reason… I’m a selfish bastard…

Would a few nights in Rohan’s arms give him a glimpse into what it would feel like to be loved by an alpha? This could be his only chance to feel two bodies connecting… to be bound and filled by an alpha. Confined in such a small place, the alpha’s heady scent was doing things to his body again.

Lust like none he’d sensed before rocked him.

Rohan eyed him. “It sounds as if we’re both stuck between a rock and a hard place.” He growled lowly and looked away. “I’ll see if I can convince him to change his mind. Otherwise… I don’t know that I can do what he asks.”

“You’d be able to refuse your omega?”

Rohan drew in a shaky breath. “I’ll have to.”

Gray struggled to concentrate. The heat sensation intensified. His ass was leaking his cream, ready for the alpha to take him. Instinct screamed inside for him to kneel down and show his ass, ready to take the man’s seed.

Rohan’s jaw tensed. He took two steps closer and stopped inches from Gray. He inhaled deeply before a groan rose from his chest. “Go.Now. Before I lose control.”

The rumbled sound made Gray close his eyes for a brief second, the need to submit high. Instinct had him ready to kneel on the floor and offer his body up for the alpha’s use. Gray fought it tooth and nail, unwilling to embarrass himself any further. He nodded before quickly heading to the door. He walked out, feeling as if he was in a daze. Gray made his way down the omega side of the building and showed the guard his ID at the entrance. Once outside, the warm summer sun shone down upon him.

In a couple of weeks, the seasons would begin their change.

College would start soon, and Avery would be away for long hours. The boys would start back to school a couple of weeks later.

And he would have little to no purpose other than cleaning and cooking, spending his days alone. Sketching… painting… idling away the time with no real commitment. Not that being a surrogate would change that much. The babe that could grow within wouldn’t be there for him to hold. To love.

But there would be purposefulness to his days. He would be creating a life for two males who loved one another.

Gray walked down the street and caught an oncoming trolley before sitting inside the near vacant car, the quadrant whipping past him in a blur. He felt his world flipping upside down.

One thought commanded his attention.

Could he withstand Rohan’s touch and not be forever consumed by it?

Chapter Eleven

Gone too far…

As soon as the door closed behind Rohan, he saw the drop of Jamie’s shoulders. The ride home had been stress-filled, but silent. He sensed the argument to come and didn’t want the entire world to see his anger.

And hewasangry.

Angry enough that he wanted to punch a fist through a wall. He glanced down at his white knuckles as he tried to rein in the emotion. The more he willed himself to calm, the worse he felt. This wasn’t how he wanted to spend his day… not when they’d been blessed with so many of them thanks to that single word.

Remission.

They’d been handed a miracle.

“Go ahead. I know you want to yell,” Jamie said, his back still turned.

Rohan opened his mouth to do just that—and couldn’t. There was no way he could vocalize how he felt in that moment.
