She had to attend the gala as his PA, it was the only option, because not bringing her, and leaving her alone to fend for herself in light of this chatter, could be tantamount to killing her himself. Sometimes you have to hide in plain sight, and a move on Gretchen in his presence was another matter entirely. He was certain he could squelch any rumors about his alleged feelings towards her by publicly being callous.
I’m going to need to be ready for this one.Logan pulled out his personal cell phone, and dialed the only person he trusted with the life of his fated mate, Sloan.
“Well met.” The voice on the other end was gruff and no nonsense.
“Well met, indeed. I need some advice my friend.” Logan was feeling better about his odds already.
Sloan was known as kick ass first and ask questions later sort of fellow, so it was no surprise when he said, “My advice is, go for the throat.”
“Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.”
With disappointment he said, “If throat isn’t on the menu, I’m not sure why you called.”
“I need some tactical advice.” Logan knew that as efficient as Sloan was, there wouldn’t be any beating around the bush. No one shot straighter than the dragon on the other end of this call. “There’s a human I’m concerned about.”
“I know how that goes.” Sloan was himself involved with a human PEACE officer.
“Which is exactly why you’re the person I need to speak with. I have intel that Gideon’s Torch noticed how much attention I pay to my secretary, and I’m getting nervous about it.”
“Is it tummy ache nervous, or can’t sleep at night nervous?”
“It’s going to become the latter, I think.”
Sloan, went silent as he considered, “And how important is this human?”
“She’s my fated mate… but, it’s not that simple. I just can’t be with her. The time isn’t right.”
“I’m not the oldest, or wisest dragon that ever lived. Not by a long shot, but here’s what I know. You can’t fight this thing, but if you must, you need to keep her as close as possible.”
“That’s the plan.”

Gretchen
"Gretchen." She heard a knock on her door, and her roommate barged into her room. Gretchen slowly pulled herself up with a scowl. "Get up. There is someone at the door for you."
Gretchen looked at her confused, "Who is it? I'm not expecting anyone."
Jessica only shrugged before she turned walking out of the room. Gretchen pulled herself out of bed and headed into the kitchen. She rubbed her eyes as she pulled the front door open.
A man stood there wearing a simple black suit. He smiled at her, "Gretchen?"
She looked at the large box in his hands that had a red bow, and then back up to him. "Yes?"
"This is for you." He handed the box over, "I was told to bring it from Logan. He said everything you need will be in it."
Everything clicked. It was the gown she was supposed to wear for the event. She smiled and nodded her head, "Thank you."
The man turned and left. Gretchen turned and shut the door as she took the box inside. She walked into the kitchen as Jessica started a pot of coffee.
"So, what is it?" She asked as she leaned over the counter.
Gretchen pulled the red ribbon off and pulled the box open. She was blown away at how gorgeous the dress was. It's a beautiful pale blue dress with diamonds stitched in the shape of stars over the gown. She's even more shocked at the diamond necklace and earrings that match with it.
"Holy shit!" Jessica's eyes widened in shock as she took it in. "Wow, fuck. Gretchen, your boss, has the hots for you."
Gretchen loved to think so, but she knew that wasn't the truth. She shook her head, "This is for work. I've seen these events, and this is what people wear. He just wants me to blend in."
