Roan hung up the phone and I couldn’t help but laugh.
“How is he doing in the hot seat for once?” I asked and Roan chuckled. “Give us a moment?” he asked the personal shopper, and she nodded, stepping out. I drifted to him and he smoothed his hands over the sweater that covered me.
“I quite like this,” he murmured. I nodded.
“It’s warm, I think it might be a keeper.”
“Oh, there are several things coming home with us that you’ve tried to pass on.”
“You two can be such bullies,” I whispered and Roan smirked.
“All in your best interest, Poppet; but I do think you know that.”
I sighed slightly and nodded…
“You know he was diagnosed with Oppositional Defiance Disorder, right? I don’t know how he even got into the military. He was… he was so broken inside,” I whispered. I felt guilty even saying it out loud… I mean, I had always kept Kyle’s secrets. Just as he had always kept mine but this was Roan, and for whatever reason he’d let Roan in when he’d lost me and that? That meant something.
“I believe his borderline sociopathy helped with that,” Roan murmured. “Although what you just said does shine a light on a few things.”
I took in a shuddering breath and asked him, “He ever really apologize before? To you, I mean?” I hugged myself and Roan smiled.
“I think we both know, KylefuckingLachlan doesn’t apologize with words.”
“Actions speak louder than words anyway,” I whispered softly.
“Aye, he’s said as much more than a few times to me.”
I twisted my lips back and forth and settled for biting my bottom one. “What is he asking you to do?” I asked. “I mean, I know he asked you to do something in regard to me and—”
I was shaking, nervous, scared, and I didn’t know why. Roan leaned forward and placed his lips against my forehead, breathing out slowly, the warm blush of his breath against my skin sort of short circuited my anxiety response and my body lost some of its tension. I breathed out slowly.
“Easy, I would think by now you would realize I would protect you. Even from him.”
“Yes, I know,” I whispered.
“He doesn’t wish me to spoil the surprise, and honestly, I think it’s a good one.” He smiled and pulled me close, cuddling me.
“Yeah?” I asked.
“Very much so… you two have yet to talk.”
“Yeah, well,Kyle…” I said. He was the king of procrastination when it came to talking about the big shit.
“Indeed, Kyle,” he chuckled.
“How many more things do I have left to try on?” I asked, I was getting weary and overwhelmed.
“I think that’s enough for now, there’s always tomorrow. Go put on a robe, yeah? I’ll settle things out here.”
“Okay,” I whispered. I went inside and did as he asked, stripping down and putting on one of the hotel’s fluffy robes.
He sent the personal shopper away making an appointment for her to return the following morning for her to finish up with me and then came through to the bedroom as I sat on the end of the bed.
He smiled charmingly at me saying, “I know just what you need,” before disappearing into the bathroom. A moment later the rush of water into the tub had me perking up.
“You’re a genius!” I called out.
“Oh, I know,” he called back. “Choose one of your bath bombs for me, would you, Love?”
