Chapter 1

Cambri

Ten people.I’ve interviewed ten people so far and no one works. I thought finding a roommate would be easy. It’s a cute little ranch house that is completely updated. There are two bedrooms and one really nice big bathroom. There’s a decent-sized backyard. It’s close to downtown yet feels like you are in the country.

I’ve interviewed ten people and there’s not a chance in hell that I could live with any of them. I’m starting to lose faith in being able to find someone to help me keep this house. I can’t afford it all on my own, not with what I make waitressing.

I check my phone and realize interview number eleven is about to happen. This guy sounds good on paper, but so did all the others.

The doorbell rings and I sigh getting off the couch. My high ponytail bounces as I walk toward the door, and I check myself in the mirror on the wall. My blue eyes look defeated, but I’m able to plaster on a fake smile.

I open the door and damn I’m not ashamed to admit he’s hot. Short brown hair, dark eyes, muscular body, and tattoos. Maybe we can just skip the interview this time around.

“Hey, I’m Jayden Adler,” he says, sticking his hand out.

I snap my eyes up to his and grin, slightly embarrassed in my eye fucking ways. “Cambri Hansley. It’s great to meet you, Jayden. Come on in,” I say, shaking his hand.

He steps inside and I notice his worn-in jeans and tight shirt a bit better. There’s no way this guy doesn’t have a girlfriend or an endless stream of women that follow him home at night.

He looks around, nodding as he takes in the house. I feel a bit of pride because I did all the updates myself.

“It’s really nice.” He looks down at the worn linoleum floor in the kitchen. I haven’t gotten around to replacing it yet. It’s a bitch to get up and I gave up. The rest of the house has laminate hardwood flooring, though. He lifts his eyes to mine and grins. “You tried getting this up, didn’t you?”

I laugh, nodding. “Yeah, but it wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be.”

“Linoleum is a bitch sometimes, depending on the type of glue used. I can do this, no problem,” he says.

“You do flooring?” I ask.

“No, I’m in construction.”

Construction. That would be someone great to live with. If something happens, he’d be able to fix it without calling for help.

“Would you like to sit down on the couch, and I’ll show you around in a few minutes,” I offer.

He walks over and sits down. “What do you do?” he asks, turning toward me.

“I’m a waitress at the diner downtown.”

“Oh yeah, they have good food. We go there for lunch a lot,” he says.

I smile, trying to remember this is an interview for a roommate, not a first date. I clear my throat and fold my hands. “So, tell me about yourself.”

“I’m twenty-six. I work in construction. I am currently living with my buddy, but he invited his girlfriend to move in and we don’t get along very well. I thought it was time to get out of there. I’m a pretty neat guy. I can cook.” He laughs, shaking his head. “Sorry, I really don’t know what the hell to say here.”

I smile, shrugging. “I don’t know what the hell I’m doing either. I’ve never interviewed people before, especially to live with me. But all my friends have decided to get married and apparently, they wanna live with their husbands and not me.”

We both laugh and he scrubs his handsome face. “Okay, let’s start over.”

I nod.

He continues, “I’m a pretty simple guy. I like having a few drinks on the weekend. I bust my ass all week at work, working long hours. So I usually just chill during the weekend. I’m really looking for a place I can call home.”

I like him. I really fucking like him. He seems perfect. He’s confident, but not cocky. He works hard like I do, and it seems he likes to have a little fun too.

“Oh one more thing,” he says.

Here it is. He’s got a girlfriend and my walls will be rattling every night.
