On the way to my next class I get a text from Tillman.

Tillman: Lyle is staying in jail for a while. His parents didn’t post his bail.

Odette: That’s a relief. Thank you for finding that out.

Odette: Also thank you for the new books. You saved my life... again!

Tillman: You’re welcome. I wanted to make sure you were safe. I knew you needed the books, so it was a no-brainer. Thankfully your sister has no problem going through your things.

Odette: Haha so I heard. I still can’t thank you enough.

Tillman: Actually, you can. Tonight are the street races. Will you be my date, Odette?

Nerves slam into me. I’ve never been to a race, not even to watch Onyx or Odin. I know they both race when they get the chance, but I’ve never actually watched one. They seem terrifying to me. Watching your loved ones hurl down asphalt in cars at high speeds knowing they could lose control at any moment just isn’t my idea of fun. However, this is my world now and I need to be there for all of them. Sighing, I suck up my fears and answer his question.

Odette: I’d love to be your date.

Tillman: Yes! I probably won’t see you until right before the races. I have to take the boys to JamesTown for their jobs, but I’ll pick you up before they start.

Odette: I’ll see you then.

Once I reach my classroom, I silence my phone and try my best to pay attention, but my knee keeps bouncing up and down with nervous energy. This is completely new for me. I look down at my outfit and another wave of nerves hit me. I have nothing to wear. As soon as class ends, I call Onyx. She laughs when I tell her my dilemma. “Don’t worry, little sis, I got you covered. Get your cute butt home and we’ll get you fixed up.” Thank goodness my sister knows what I need because I clearly don’t.
