“He resisted arrest for domestic violence and during the scuffle a vase broke, exposing one of many drug stashes. He’s in prison, but he somehow found out about Lennon. At first, he’d call trying to sweet talk me into taking him back. He didn't know I was pregnant yet and wanted me to say he didn't rape me. He wasn’t supposed to contact me, so he’d get his cellmate to do it or his family. When that didn't work the threats came. At first, he said he’d kill me. Then it was he would take Lennon from me once she was born, and he learned of her existence. His parents threatened to take Lennon once they found out, and I panicked. Moved until they found meagain. I live in constant fear that one day he’ll make good on his threats. Marco will kill me and take Lennon, or his family will kidnap her. I can’t let that happen.”
“It won’t. Give me his last name, and I swear to you, babe, he’ll be nothing but a bad memory.”
“I believe you, but this isn't your fight. It’s mine. His family is powerful, and they aren’t stupid, Ace. They’re dangerous.”
“Norah, get you know I like you. I’ve had a lot of bad, but you and your girl reminded me that I can smile. Didn’t even hurt,” I tease her. She rewards me with her gorgeous smile. “There it is. Your sunshine. Do whatever it takes to keep you both safe. Give you my word.”
“Ace, you’ve got enough on your plate with your crazy ex. Add mine into the mix and you’ll go insane. I can’t ask you to do that. As much as I like you and want to explore whatever this is brewing between us I won’t bring more drama into your life than I have already caused.”
“Let me give you what you’re too good of a person to ask for, babe. Let me handle it and give you piece of mind. Not because we’ve fucked, but because you and Lennon deserve a life without fear.”
“Ace.”
“Give me his name and location. Promise you nothing will come back on you. There won't be any blowback.”
“Do you mean what I think you mean?”
“You really want to know?”
“This is crazy.”
“I’m an outlaw. Think you know or at least have an idea that I’m not going to get a citizen of the year award anytime soon.”
“Well...” She grins. “I think that would have more to do with your sunny disposition.”
“Yeah. That’s me a ray of fucking sunshine.”
“I should go.”
“Think you’re not letting what I’m saying penetrate. I’m telling you I’m putting in my claim. You and Lennon, you’re mine, babe. I wasn’t expecting to feel so damn strongly about you and not this damn fast but here we are. Think we’ve got something worth exploring. If that means making sure that asshole or his family never crosses your path I’m up for the job.”
“You’re putting in your claim?”
“Yeah.” I fold my arms across my chest.
“Ace, I will never allow myself to be treated like a man’s property. I didn't for Marco, and I won't now as much as I like you.”
“Biker babe attitude.”
“What?”
“Already got it in you. Like it a lot when this side of you comes out.”
I told myself to stay away, but I can’t. Norah’s gotten under my skin. Never understood it when it happened to my brothers of the club. Meeting a woman and just knowing deep in their bones thatshe’s the one. Now with Norah, I get it. I want her. Her and Lennon. They’re what I’ve been missing.
“I’m no biker babe.” She shakes her head.
“You got that fire.” Eileen never had it. Took me too damn long to figure that out. Wasted too much damn time with her. Believing her fucking lies. Trying to make shit work. Not wanting to go back on my vows. Her worst was more than I could take though.
“Ace.” She sighs and takes another drink.
“What time you gotta pick up Lennon?”
“Whenever. She never attends a full day.”
“I need to swing by the clubhouse. Don’t want you driving upset and after drinking. We’ll grab her on the way.”
“Ace, I appreciate what you’re trying to do here, but he’s going to find me, and I don't know what he’ll do if he thinks I have someone checking him out.”
