Scarlett took a deep breath, then released it. “Okay.”

“As I said, I’m not sure if all of it is accurate but I do know that Damien Sommer was a hothead. Not all hunters follow ourcodex, which clearly states no harm should come to the moon of a pack. We know how important they are to you and how much they are needed to keep the peace within a pack through the alpha.”

Scarlett sniffed and dabbed away more tears. “It’s not your fault.”

“I know, but your family lost a friend and I’m truly sorry for that.”

“That means a lot to me.” Scarlett tried to control the tears through her breathing. “Thank you for doing that for me.”

“Anything for you.”

“Is Ezra being good to you?” she asked, changing the subject.

Ezra grunted disapprovingly. “Mateo’s the one blasting girls’ music and tormenting me.”

“I’m not going to sit in silence for hours on end!” Mateo defended.

The two of them made her laugh, and the soft sound was music to everyone’s ears. “I think Vince feels the same, only he adores me too much to tell me to turn it off.”

“That is not true.”

Scarlett tested the restraints of the seatbelt by leaning over to kiss his cheek. “I know. I’m just teasing you.” Another kiss before she reached for the snack bag. “Are you two eating and hydrating?”

“We are,” Mateo assured right away. “No need to worry about us. We feel very spoiled at the moment.”

“I realised that I missed that very much. It wasn’t the same cooking just for myself. I never knew how much I enjoyed taking care of others—even my pack—until I had no one to take care of. I guess it’s true: you only know how much you love something once you don’t have it anymore.”

“Maybe I should pull over so you can spoil us even more,” Ezra purred rather seductively.

There was a thump, then an “ouch!” from Ezra.

“Why do you have to let your intrusive thoughts reign free all the time?”

Vince lifted his hand and ran the back of his fingers over her hot cheeks as she tried to hide her blush by bowing her head. “We enjoy spoiling you as much as you spoil us. Our next hunts won’t be this intense nor will we leave you for that longeveragain.”

“I didn’t mean to make you feel bad for going out. I still want you to do your thing. I don’t want you to change your entire lives just for me.”

“We know that, and just want you to know this was not an ordinary hunt,” Mateo chimed in.

“I hope not because if this is your stress level during every hunt, my blood pressure will kill me before any supernatural creature.” Scarlett laughed and fed Vince a piece of chocolate before eating one herself. “Or you just have to work on masking your stress better.”

“Whatever you’re thinking, keep it to yourself,” Mateo warned Ezra, who responded with a low grumble.

Scarlett’s cheeks blushed again, clearly sensing that Ezra was rather horny. Then again, when wasn’t he? “I missed you too,” she softly admitted.

“Maybe you should let me take Vince’s seat and I’ll show you just how much I missed you,” Ezra purred like a depraved wild cat.

Vince’s hand reached out before Ezra could even finish the train of thought. He had her chin between his thumb and index, turning her head towards him. Scarlett gnawed that bottom lip again, and Vince couldn’t help but tug it free and replace it with his thumb. The second the wet heat of her mouth surrounded his finger, he was hard as a brick.

“No one is taking my seat,” he growled—again.

Scarlett’s breathing was heavy, her chest rising and falling unnervingly as she stared at him with those wide, doe eyes.

Ezra chuckled his mind full of jealousy, but also in a way satisfied. Maybe this had been his plan all along. “Enjoy, princess. Our mute has finally found his possessive side.”

Then the line went dead.

“D-do you mind when he calls you that?” she stuttered around his finger.
