Later, she’d enjoy his full attention.
“I’ll leave you the sandwich and snack I made for you,” she offered. “I’ll have mine in the kitchen so you can take over the tech world.”
He laughed.
Well, he’d rather take over her world, but he had to keep his girl in beat-up boots, and designer jeans. She burned through them while working crime scenes and chasing bad guys.
“Thank you, Sweetness,” he offered.
Regretfully, she got up from the couch, and picked up her dress from the floor. Pulling it on, he joined her, getting back into his clothing.
When he saw his phone blinking, he knew someone had been trying to reach him.
Picking it up, he saw he had missed calls.
Ten of them.
Uh-oh.
All of them were from the same person too.
As Elizabeth cleaned up the uneaten picnic lunch, Chris dialed into his voicemail and heard Sam’s voice.
‘Christopher, I’ve been trying to reach you and Elizabeth. Charlie had an issue. We had to call an ambulance. He’s at George Washington Hospital. I think he might have had a heart attack. Can you get Elizabeth here? I have already called Tony. Hurry!’
Well, holy shit.
Glancing over at his woman, he knew he had to tell her, and it wasn’t going to go over well. She was super attached to her father.
Finding out he was sick was going to throw her into a tizzy. While she accused Charlie of being overprotective, the apple didn’t fall far from that tree.
“Baby?” he asked.
She glanced over.
When she saw his face, she knew. She could read a room, and she’d seen Chris get that look before.
“What happened?” she asked, getting that panicky feeling in her chest.
There was no way to sugarcoat this.
Chris told her.
“Sam called. Charlie went to the hospital. He thinks he’s had a heart attack.”
That was all he had to say.
She gasped, and dropped everything. Racing for the door, she grabbed her coat, pulled on some shoes, and had Chris right behind her.
When she went to take the keys, he stopped her.
“I’ll drive. You’ve been chugging wine, and there’s snow,” he said, seeing her in a panic. “I didn’t.”
His woman literally stood there looking around like she was lost in what to do. It appeared he needed to take care of her.
Chris calmed her by taking her face in his hands.
“He’ll be okay. Breathe,” he said.
