After a few songs, we walked off stage and headed the backway to the greenroom. There were fresh cold bottles of water waiting on top of the small beer cooler and some snacks.
“Grab a quick bit and hydrate. It’s hot under those lights and we have a way to go. Lucy, doing great out there.” Tim sat, shoveling a wrap down.
I grabbed a water and was too pumped to eat but did grab a towel to get some of the sweat off me. The lights on stage were hot, plus all the walking and dancing had my blood pumping.
“Hey, is it cool if I go shout at my girlfriend really quick? She’s at the bar.” I had to go see Amy and just squeal.
“Are you sure you don’t want a bite? Don’t need you passing out up there,” Tim said.
I shook my head and held up my water bottle, so he nodded and smiled. There was no way I could eat right now. I headed out but heard the door open again quickly behind me.
Eric grabbed my arm, “Hey, I won’t keep you since you wanna see your friend, but I had to tell you, you look amazing tonight.” Even though he seemed sort of immature earlier he was still hot and seemed genuine now.
“Thanks.” It was all I could muster up. I was still pumped from performing and knew more was to come.
“So, maybe after the set is finished later, we can hang out here for a bit.” He brushed some hair off my face, which wasn’t very smooth since I was sweating, and the hair was sticking to me. I shrugged my shoulders as I considered it. He was hot, but maybe it would be weird to get involved with him. I’d be working with these guys a while if all went well, and my dating record was not solid. Again, self-sabotage queen. He grinned so I flashed a small smile but walked past him to go talk to Amy.
“Okay, that was crazy! Did you hear me screaming? I won’t be able to talk tomorrow!” Amy and I were grasping onto each other, and I could barely breathe from excitement as we spoke over each other.
“I know, like, I can’t even explain it! I never thought I wanted to be a performer but that was such a rush! And I didn’t care if anyone saw my ass!” We both laughed hard and continued talking over each other. Eventually I saw the band head back to the stage, so I grabbed my water and ran back up.
We finished two more sets over the course of the night and were done by ten. The DJ picked up after that, so I was free to roam. I met Amy back down at the bar and Jaz brought me a Blue Moon. I was still toweling the sweat off my chest and shoulders and could feel my hair sticking to my shoulders.
“On the house for the new lead singer. You did great, honey!” I couldn’t wipe the idiotic smile off my face, so I stopped trying and clanked my bottle with Amy’s.
“I don’t know if I can sleep tonight, I’m so hyped still!” I was squealing at this point. “What a rush!”
Amy had a strange face, but was still smiling as she looked over my shoulder so I turned around. It was the band.
“Hey, guys this is Amy. Amy, this is Tim, Eric, and Joe.” Amy stuck her hand out and they all shook it, Joe a little longer than the others.
Joe was ballsy. “Amy, what a pretty name. Need some company?” I took a deep breath waiting for her response.
“Well, I don’t know. Joe, was it? Hate to disappoint, but I’m a muff diver, not a pole pounder.” Eric and Tim let out obnoxiously loud laughs and Joe turned five shades of red before he stomped off.
“I’m sorry, she has this condition, B.O.B.S. She can’t help herself.”
“Oh yeah, what’s that?”
Amy smiled and took that one without missing a beat, “Big Ole Bitch Syndrome.” Tim and Eric laughed again, and a relieved sigh escaped me. I didn’t want to piss them all off my first day.
“Lucy, I’ll text tomorrow but plan to meet back here Tuesday night same time. You did great, just great.” Tim shook my hand and left, but Eric was still lingering.
“So, can I sit with you ladies?” Amy looked to me but then nodded. Eric pulled up a stool and we sat for a while and drank. Eric told us about the old singer, what happened, and how they ended up getting the gig here when that all fell apart. The chat was easy going and he didn’t seem like the childish boy gawking at me earlier.
Eventually Amy checked her phone, “Shit, I gotta run. Meeting someone at The Lounge. Don’t wait up.” She jumped up and gave me a peck on the cheek and told Eric goodnight.
“So, you don’t go barhopping with her? Don’t girls travel in packs?”
I nodded in agreement that behavior was normal. “Well, she meets her prey at that bar. She never brings them home and never brings them here. I think she keeps them away from me so they can’t stalk me to get to her. She’s a bit of a player for lack of better term. But she’s amazing and just hasn’t found anyone to tame the wild beast yet. She deserves amazing.”
He nodded in acceptance then took another swig.
“Hey, it’s kinda loud in here. Let’s go to the greenroom.” He stood up and reached his hand out. It was pretty loud, and he was pretty cute. So what if we fooled around some? It’s not like we’re going to christen the room, at least not tonight. I grabbed his hand and my beer, and we walked back to the greenroom.
We sat for a while chatting about the performance and he asked about my job as we kept knocking back beer from the beer cooler. He told me about the other guys in the band and how they met. They’d played together for several years before the falling out with the last front man. We kept drinking and talking for a while and created a stack of empty cans and a nice buzz.
Eventually, he slid up next to me and leaned in quickly. It caught me off guard, but I reached my hands up to his neck after the shock wore off. His lips were soft, and he caressed my face sending blood to all the good parts. It was like a high school makeout session. He kissed me deeply but slowly, occasionally pulling away to look into my eyes. God help me.
