Jaz took a napkin from her prep stand and wrote something on it then passed it to me.

“I don’t just give his info to all the girls that ask, but he did say he was gonna be with you. But to be safe, keep your sources to yourself.” She winked. “I don’t wanna piss off the boss.”

The boss? What the hell was she talking about? Was there some sort of pecking order of bartenders? I didn’t want to ask since she already produced his address for me, so I grabbed the water and the napkin and walked out.

His address was on the same street as our apartment and the club, but I don’t recall ever passing it on my way home, so I plugged it into the GPS on my phone. It was the opposite direction of the club. He had walked me home out of his way a couple of nights ago. I was still moderately mad, but also couldn’t ignore the pit that formed in my stomach. Something didn’t make sense.

I checked my phone the whole walk to his building, but nothing ever came. I made it to the upscale building and went into the elevator to find his apartment. I stepped out into the hall straight out of a magazine and heard some girls talking as they walked down the hall toward me. I held the doors for them and dropped the empty water bottle into the trash next to the doors, but then heard something they said about commotion earlier.

“I can’t believe the cops took him off. I wonder what he did.”

“Well, he probably deserved it, he was always such a dick.”

When they got to the door, they smiled and thanked me, but I kept holding it as they stepped in.

“Hey, sorry, I overheard. What was the commotion earlier?” I asked as they pushed the button to go down.

“Oh, that guy who lives on the end got served a warrant and they took him away.” She leaned to push the button again to go down.

I pushed the door open again before I asked, “Which guy?”

She shrugged her shoulders and made a crazy face like I was insulting her by asking. “I think it’s John or Jason or something. He owns that club down that street. Can we go now?”

I dropped my arm to my side and the doors closed. A warrant? Owner of the club? That couldn’t be right. I looked at the apartment number on the napkin and walked down the white and beige hall. Sure enough, the door on the end.

I knocked a few times, getting louder each time. The pit in my stomach had grown to a melon. I knocked again and some guy in a casual suit came out of an apartment nearby.

“Hey, he’s not there. Probably won’t be back today,” the man said.

I rushed over and grabbed his arm. “Is the man who lives there Jason? Where did he go?”

The man looked at my hand on his shirt but didn’t move or push me away. Instead, he looked concerned.

“Are you okay, miss? Is he your brother or something?”

I shook my head violently.

“Look, Jason lives there but the cops came earlier and hauled him off. I don’t know why, just saw it through the peephole. Good luck, miss.” He looked down at my hand, so I let him go then he turned to get on the elevator.

I stood in the hall, not sure what to do or where to go. Well, I knew what to do and where to go, but really didn’t want to.

Chapter 12

Lucy

I walked through the doors of the police station that was directly to the left of the county jail. God this place was depressing.

“Hey, Luce! Long time, no see!” Jimmy walked over, well waddled over, and threw his arm over my shoulder. “Here to see your dad?”

I shook my head. “Not exactly. Actually, maybe you can help me? Someone was brought in today. It’s a friend. Can you look to see if he’s still in booking or maybe tell me why he was brought in?”

Jimmy looked like I asked him to hide a body. “You say your friend was arrested? Not good company to keep, Lucy.”

I smacked my hand on the counter but tried to not lose my cool. “I’m sure it’s a mistake. Can you just look? Please?”

He still looked like he was about to break the law, even though it was public record, but went around the counter and typed a few times. I noticed him glance at my hand several times as he typed so I pulled it off the counter.

“What’s your friend’s name, Luce?”
