My eyes found hers; her shocked, wide, and frightened eyes. The gun clasped tightly between her shaking hands.
I quickly checked David’s body, his breath shallow and barely breathing now, the life draining from his body right before my eyes.
Posey’s hands shook violently, clasped tightly around the gun. I quickly rushed to her, taking the gun carefully. Engaging the safety, ejecting the magazine, and pulling back the slide to clear the round in the chamber, setting each item carefully on the dresser.
I carefully pulled her from under David, my eyes roving over her.
“Soren?” She whispered, her lips dripping blood. I held her at arm’s length, searching her for the source of all her bleeding.
“Posey, where... where did he get you?” My voice was shaky. My hands were shaky. I pushed away the shock as hard as I could.
“I’m okay,” she whispered, her own hands pulling at my shirt where David had slashed me with the knife.
“It’s okay. I’ll be okay. It’s just a cut,” I reassured her. She nodded, two tears falling from her eyes, before her eyes rolled back in her head. “Posey! Posey!!”
I heard the sirens and screamed at the top of my lungs.
“We’re up here!!”
I screamed over and over, until my voice was hoarse, and the footsteps of the police pounded up the staircase.
Suddenly there were people everywhere.
A million questions flooded, and I ignored every single one of them, focusing on Posey laying in my arms.
“Mr. Wellington, let us take her and check her over, okay? You come with, stay right beside her while we check you, too, okay?” a kind feminine voice said softly beside me, somehow cutting through all of the noise and chaos.
I nodded quietly, letting the paramedics pull her from my arms. I quickly stood, with the aid of that same woman, and made my way down the stairs on shaky legs.
We had barely made it to the living room, where several paramedics stood, when Posey woke up.
“Soren!” She cried out at the top of her lungs.
“Posey! I’m here! I’m right here!” I called, pushing my way to her and taking her hand.
“Both of you, please let us work,” the paramedic said softly. They worked on us, checking every cut, every scratch, every bruise. My eyes didn’t leave hers. I watched every tear fall from her eyes.
“Did I?” she asked, barely a whisper. I pulled away from the kind woman and moved to Posey’s side further. I took her hand in mine, kissing the knuckles.
“You did what you had to do, love. You are safe now,” I reassured, my eyes never leaving her.
“Mr. Wellington, you can be with her if you give me just a few minutes to clean your cut up. Both of you need to be taken to the hospital,” the woman advised.
I nodded my head.
“I’ll need to get a statement from the two of you,” a detective cut in, but the paramedic was quick to put her own foot down.
“Which you can absolutely do at the hospital once they’ve been cleared. As is standard procedure. Do we have an understanding, Merrick?” The sass on that woman was fierce.
“Got it. I’ll just see the two of you at the –”
“Excuse me, but how the hell did this happen?” I spat back at him. I rubbed at my face in frustration, the adrenaline coursing through my veins like a drug and making my hands shake. “
We aren’t sure yet, but we think Mr. Gershaw somehow gained access to your alarm system. Did anyone else have the code, Mr. Wellington? Anyone who could have given the code out?” The detective was just doing his job. He was just doing his job. I repeated the words to myself in my head repeatedly, trying to calm the anger inside me at the entire situation.
“No. I would never have given the code to anyone. Posey and I are the only ones who had it. And I can tell you she didn’t give it out either.” I spoke quietly, watching as the man looked at me with no small measure of skepticism.
“That’s enough, Detective. You can speak to them both once they’ve been seen at the hospital.” The EMT spoke again, this time giving the Detective a look that told him to not cross her.
