When he saw the wide eyed stare of his son’s eyes, he realized his son was gone.Artemy grabbed his son to his chest and blubbered about seeking his revenge for his death.Then he began rocking his son’s body back and forth as he vowed his revenge on the one responsible for killing him.
Briar heard footsteps running toward them and she took another step back from the bodies.
Artemy heard them as well and he dropped his son back into the dirt and stood to his feet just as five men burst into the clearing.They took one look at the only man left standing and they moved forward.
Artemy took off running while still calling out curses over his shoulder.
Four of the five men went after him.
Chapter Seven
Leon took a deep breathand blew it out in the still room.He shook his head and looked over at Sergi, “That young lady is very talented, isn’t she?And she doesn’t mess around.”
Serenity looked up from Nicky’s embrace.He had held her while she fell apart after watching Briar’s moves.“No, she doesn’t fool around.She knows better.If she hesitated even for a second, those men would have killed her and simply walked over her body to kill someone else she cared about.She grew up on the streets of this city and she’s seen more than any other kid should ever see.But she survived and grew up.She was dumped on the streets when she was only five, little more than a baby but she survived.Those people you saw fighting there before are the same ones that helped her grow up, they are her family.She protects them as much as they protect her.”
Leon shook his head.“Never fear, I wasn’t trying to put her down, I was admiring her.They were spectacular and she hit her marks on both men.Even some well seasoned trained athletes cannot do that.”
She gave him a nod.
Now, Leon looked at Sergi.“With Mario’s death, his men will more than likely fade into the shadows and wait for another chance to shine in the light.But that won’t be today or even tomorrow.They know they can’t go home again, so it will take us some time to round them all up.”
“Da, it will take us some time to put down the Blue Crusaders here as well.”Sergi nodded.“I just hope they can find Artemy soon and we can once more throw him in prison and throw away the key.”
Sergi turned his head and stared at Serenity before he said, “But what I really want to know is why no one here stopped her from leaving the safety of the hotel in the first place.”
Serenity shook her head.“Mr.C, you can’t tell that girl anything.She’s gonna do what she thinks is right, whether you think it is or not.But in this instance, she did the right thing.For her.You don’t understand her at all if you thought for one moment that she wouldn’t stand with her friends in this fight.Those people are her family.She would never leave them out there on their own, never.”She motioned toward her monitor.
Everyone turned to see Pippy on the screen, checking Briar for any injuries.
“Pippy is the leader of the street people,” Serenity explained.“And he has always looked after her.She’s his adopted daughter and he’s the one who taught her those survival skills.Hell, she’s probably the one that convinced them all to fight on your behalf.But they would only have fought if Pippy gave the go ahead.She’s grown up with them, she knows them whereas she doesn’t know any of you all that well.”She turned her head and glared at Felix.“And if you remember it, you hurt her in a way she couldn’t forgive.You took one look at her and you slapped her for something she said.You didn’t even listen to her words.Abby and Anita were in real danger that day and the Devils were looking for blood, one way or another.They wanted the Bratva to be rattled and the death of one of the wives would have done that.She stepped in and saved two wives that day and no one even thanked her for that.”Tears slipped down her face as she continued, “You guys took one look at her and dismissed her.”
Sergi just shook his head.“I never felt that way.I just want her to be protected today, just like the rest of our family.”He stared at Serenity and went on, “I admire the girl.Always have.”Then he looked at the screen again and saw John walking back with Artemy in shackles.“Khorosho, they caught him.”
Everyone turned to look at the screen.
John, Leon’s man, walked him back to where Pippy and Briar were standing.
