I couldn’t contain the tears in my eyes, and my hands began to shake as the walls closed in around me. Bear whined from my lap, and I couldn’t seem to catch my breath. Numbness was radiating out from my fingertips, and I stood, afraid someone was in the house with me. I grabbed the gun from my purse and held it in my shaking hands as I slowly started to check the house. Bear walked next to me, rubbing his side against my leg as I checked every closet, under every bed, and yanked back the shower curtain to make sure I was alone.

When I was sure I was alone, I fell to my knees with the gun in my hands and wailed into the empty house. Bear barked and rubbed against my face as I hung my head in shame. I don’t know how long I kneeled in the hallway, but eventually, I calmed down and sat up.

Looking down at the gun in my hand, I vowed then and there, I was never going to let him, or the club, get away with it. I’m owed vengeance, and one way or another, I was going to have my day of reckoning with whoever he was. If they wouldn’t tell me, then I’d have to make them.

Chapter 23

Kade

Iwatched her backout of the driveway, and the chilly morning air had an ominous feeling to it. I couldn’t shake the feeling something big was coming at us and I was powerless to stop it. I would do whatever it took to protect Sadie and Jacob, even if it meant leaving the club and moving away from Portstill. We all had bad memories of the town, and a fresh start might do us all some good.

I dressed quickly and pulled my cut on, feeling like I was wrapped in deceit as I drove to Mick’s cabin to pick up Skid. He opened the door when I pulled up, and I could tell he hadn’t gotten much sleep. I knocked the snow off my boots before walking inside and closing the door behind me.

Skid was in the kitchen and he handed me a cup of coffee when I walked in. His phone dinged from the counter and he cussed under his breath as he typed out a reply.

“Everything okay?” I asked, and he shook his head before placing the phone down.

“Something happened with Callahan last night. James said he disappeared for a few hours and now they need me to go over some footage he acquired.”

“Does this have to anything to do with Skeeter?” I hated even saying the fucker’s name, but I needed to get a lock on him so I could slit his throat for what he did to Sadie.

“Not as far as I can tell. He’s got a lot of secrets that I don’t want to know, but James said something about saving a lamb. I have no clue what that means, but if Callahan is on the war path and requested me, I have to go,” he griped, and I could feel his frustration.

“What about meeting with Smokey and Bullet this morning?” I asked, frustrated that he’s choosing Callahan over his sister.

“It was Smokey who told me to go. Callahan called him late last night, and I’ve been awake since three when he called me. He said, and I quote, whatever your problem is with me can wait until Callahan’s under control. That madman has too big of a hold to get on his bad side.”

“Then I’m still going to the gun range. I want to look at the books they have and see if I can find out what the fuck they’re doing in bed with the ATF.”

He looked at me with worry that I’d never seen from him before. “Be careful.”

“Do you know something I don’t?”

“No. Just a gut feeling,” he replied cryptically, and I met his gaze with mine.

“Watch your back too. Until we figure this out, we need to keep this from Sadie. I don’t know what would happen to her if she found out the people who promised to protect her lied.”
