I have to get out of here.
The trapdoor!
I raced to Lyle, squatted beside him, and rested my hand on his chest. “I’ll make sure you get home to your parents. I promise.”
Clutching my gun, I raised the trapdoor and stared into a black void that was beyond comprehension.
The thundering noise grew louder. Whoever they were, they were arriving fast. And I doubted they were the good guys. Even the hooves sounded angry.
I lay on my stomach and peered down the hole. It took a few beats for my eyes to adjust. A rope ladder dangled from two hooks below the floor.
Clenching my jaw, hoping I wasn’t about to get a knife in my back, I slipped into the hole and onto the first rung of the rope ladder.
I pulled the trapdoor down and when I released my hold on the earth above, the ladder swung wildly beneath my feet. In complete darkness, I scrambled to the bottom. Crouching down and holding my hands forward so I didn’t crash into anything, I edged away from the ladder.
I found a wall and felt along it until I bumped into a table. Feeling in the dark, I crawled under the table, pulled my knees to my chest, and did something I hadn’t done in nine years.
I prayed.
CHAPTER 4
Wolf
Groaning,I blinked at the green haze around me, trying to work out where I was.
I licked my lips, tasting dirt and something bitter and vile.
Fuck!Recall slammed into me like tomahawk missiles. The asshole shooting at me. The explosion. My team fighting above.
Makenna.
I adjusted my mic to my lips. “Moose, you there, buddy?”
My voice was barely a croak.
A thunderous noise echoed around me like a bison stampede was storming through the village above. Or an army of tanks. I peered at the roof, expecting it to come crashing down.
The noise petered out and vanished into the silence.
What the hell was that?
Ahead of me, against the wall, was a bloody mess, but that didn’t scare me. What scared me was the dribble of blood that had traveled from the top of the wall to the bottom.
How long was I passed out?
I rolled onto my side and gasped at the pain in my arm.
Flopping onto my back, I looked at my bloody bicep.
“Fark!” My voice bounced around the empty space.
I stood and studied the blast zone around me. It was a drug lab. At least, it used to be. Based on the rust and decrepit state of the equipment, it hadn’t been used for a while.
But the sniper and ambush meant the fuckers still had something to hide.
Makenna had been right.
Is she okay?
