ChapterOne
Gage O’Brien
Gage O'Brien woke from the nightmare he had with a start.
He always hated this particular nightmare, since it wasn’t just a nightmare. But real life.
He was back in the hospital with his twin sister, Renee after she had been hit by a car while walking across the street.
He had seen the whole thing as he was coming out of the store and trying to catch up to her.
She was too impatient to wait for him and told him he could catch up. That his legs were longer than hers and he would have no trouble with it.
He didn't know that that would be the last thing she would ever say to him.
That she would be dancing along in the crosswalk, and that some drunk asshole would run the red light, hitting her and throwing her body into the air as he watched in horror, until her body hit the pavement with a sickening thud.
She hit her head and a crack sounded from it, blood started to seep onto the ground under her and she wasn't moving.
Gage felt the groceries drop from his hands and he was running toward his sister before his mind even registered it and then he was at her side, screaming for someone to call 911.
He wanted to gather Renee into his arms, but he didn't want to move her. She was still breathing; but only just.
And he knew she was broken. That her legs were twisted weird and that her collarbone shouldn't be sticking out like that.
He held back his sobs, but barely and when a crowd of people came around him, he wanted to snarl at them.
A man knelt at Renee's side, using gentle fingers to check on her and said in a far away tone, "I'm a doctor. My name is Kris Kaufman. I need to check her over. She is pretty badly injured."
Gage nodded and watched as Kris grimaced at Renee's injuries.
The sound of sirens wailing through the haze Gage was in barely registered and he blinked as men and women in blue swarmed around Renee's body.
They put cords on her and Gage was pushed out of the way, but Kris was asking him if Renee had any allergies and Gage did his best to answer.
"We need to contact your parents. Do you know how? What are their names?"
Gage nodded and gave the doctor his mom's work number, “My mom is Faye, and my dad is Ewan.”
Kris nodded, “I will call them.”
Since Gage and Renee were fifteen, they didn't need someone to care for them and their mom had given them the task to go to the store to get some groceries for dinner.
He was sure she would regret asking them now. If she hadn’t, they would have been home, playing a video game.
Gage was numb as they loaded Renee's body into the ambulance and a cop walked up to him, "Do you want to go with her?"
He nodded and sat in the front of the cop car as he drove them to the hospital.
When they got there, his mom and dad were there, both crying and hugging him hard.
They were pulled aside and Gage sat down in a chair and the cop who had brought him to the hospital handed him a cup of juice.
Gage sipped what he could and then just held it, watching in numb silence as one of the doctors talked to his parents.
His mom was sobbing, crying out Renee’s name over and over and his dad was holding her up and Gage felt his eyes burn with unshed tears.
He knew then that Renee was gone. He would never get to tease her. Never get to sit with her while they did homework. He would never have his twin by his side ever again.
