She pulls me in for a hug and I hold her tightly. This was not how I expected this morning to go, but I’ll take it.

She pulls back and looks up at me with a grin. “You also know, that if he hurts you, your Nani would be happy to hurt him. She mentioned cutting off some very important organs when she found out your dad cheated on me, so you know she’s always got your back.”

I throw my head back and laugh. “I’ll remember that, Ama. I’ll remember that.”

Chapter 31

When the fantasy matches up with the real-live person, well, I really didn’t stand a chance did I?- Brian

My mother loves Reina as much as I knew she would. Reina’s sass and genuine humor immediately draws her in. Reina, Sophie, and Mom spend an hour discussing all my quirks and aggravating habits, until I’m blushing, which I never do.

“Ma, why don’t I show Reina around? She hasn’t seen the whole place yet.”

Mom laughs. “There’s not much to show, but sure knock yourself out. We all know it’s because you don’t want me telling your girlfriend any more stories though.”

Reina and Sophie giggle and I roll my eyes upward. Inside, I’m doing happy cartwheels that Reina didn’t correct the girlfriend statement. It means, hopefully, she’s okay with having the title.

Reina starts by giving me shit about my fascination with Star Wars and the obscene number of toys that I still have. “I never would have taken you for a Sci-fi geek, soldier boy. There are more facets to you every time I look.”

She runs her fingers over my Darth Vader original figurine, still in the plastic box. I inherited it from my grandfather, who collected them in the seventies.

“I can’t believe you have all this stuff, and that your mom has actually kept it in your room,” she says softly.

I collapse down on my twin-size bed and chuckle. “This wasn’t my actual room growing up, you know? We grew up in a trailer. This house is like a palace compared to where we were raised.” I shrug. “She just wants to make sure I’m surrounded by the familiar during the times I do get to come home.”

She sits down next to me on the bed. “I think it’s really sweet. I think she’s very kind. You’re so lucky.”

I tug on her lower lip. “Why so blue? I thought you had a good talk with your mom.”

“I did. But I don’t know if we’ll ever be close like y’all are. I think she’s still disappointed in me. And I’m only going to disappoint her more if I decide not to go into medicine.” She draws her knees up to her chest and sighs.

I sit up and pull her into my arms. I kiss her cheek and breathe in the sweet smell of my girl. “Have you ever shown her your drawings before? Like the one you did of me? I don’t see how she could possibly argue with so much talent.”

She wrinkles her nose. “She won’t see it that way. She’s a famous neurosurgeon, Bri. People come from all over the country to see her. To her, my art will be just some hobby and an excuse for me not to get serious about my life.”

I caress her arm and hold her tighter. “You thought she would react differently about you and Amit. Maybe she’ll surprise you with your art too. You have to give her a chance to get to know you, Reina. The real you. Because I have, princess, and I love who you are.” She tenses in my arms. Shit, I almost said I love you, instead of the roundabout way of saying it. My guess is she’s not ready for those words yet. But God, I reallywant to say them. Because they’re true. I’m head over heels for this girl, and every day I’m drawn in a little deeper. Leaving her in a month and a half is going to kill me.

She tilts her head and looks at me. “Thank you, Brian. Thank you for being there.”

My mouth curves up in a half grin. “I would never be anywhere else.”

She kisses me and when her soft lips open, I tangle her tongue with mine. Soon, I’m laid out fully on top of her pressing into her soft body and taking the kiss deeper. I rock into her, my cock seeking the relief only she can give it.

“Brian, Reina, supper’s ready! Whatever you’re doing in there, you should probably take a break and come get Mom’s meatloaf!” Sophie’s loud voice comes clearly through my bedroom door.

I pull away. “Shit, cockblocked by my sister again.” I groan and hide my head in Reina’s shoulder.

Reina ruffles my hair. “We have time, soldier boy. For once, we still have plenty of that.”

Saying goodbye feels like a death, even though I know I will see him again. -Reina

Over the next few weeks, we fall into a rhythm. Brian is always there waiting for me at the dorm. Sophie, not so discreetly, spends those nights at her boyfriend Liam’s apartment. I don’t think it’s an imposition for either of them since they’re practically all over each other just like Brian and I are.
