But my heart sank when I saw the lights were off at McKayla’s store, too.

Fuck,I thought, a sour disappointment roiling in my chest.

I was hoping we might see each other one last time before I headed out on my trip. Yeah, our lunch date had ended on a good note, but I wanted to really leave a lasting impression on her—and not risk some six-foot-five stud from Tinder sweeping her off her feet while I was gone.

Dumbass. You didn’t even get her number,I thought, scolding myself as I carried the first couple rolls of soundproofing into the brewery. She probably thinks you don’t give a shit about her. She thinks you’re just trying to get laid, remember?

I sighed. It sucked to like someone so much and not know how they felt about you. It made me feel vulnerable. Like at any moment, I could get crushed. But there wasn’t a damn thing I could do about it now. I went back to fetch a second load of foam instead.

My spirits were quickly lifted when I found somebody waiting for me outside. A sexy babe in tight blue jeans leaned against my car, her long hair shimmering in the evening sun, a cute smirk on her beautiful face.

“Hey, neighbor,” I said, surprised and happy to see her.

“Hey there!” McKayla said, her smile growing as I neared. “Looks like you find your soundproofing.”

I chuckled. “Yeah. I had to run all over the city, but I finally found a place that sold it by the roll.”

She surprised me again—this time by running over and jumping into my arms. I caught her in midair, and she wrapped her arms around me tight.

“You’re amazing, Brett. Thank you so much for doing this,” she whispered. “I’m so glad I got to see you again before you leave.”

“Me too,” I whispered back into hers. “I was bummed when I rolled up and saw your lights were off. I thought I’d missed you.”

“Aw! Brett! You’re so cute.”

She squeezed me even tighter. My heart pounded in my chest because I loved how right her body felt in my arms—but this moment couldn’t last forever. She slid out of my arms and peeked around the open back of my G Wagon.

“Can I help you carry all this inside?” she asked. “I know you’re probably short on time.”

“Sure, that’d be great,” I said, and grabbed a couple rolls myself.

With McKayla’s help, we unloaded the car in a few trips. Now we surveyed the job ahead of us—rolls and rolls of soundproofing foam laid out beneath the bare wall ahead of us.

“Now for the fun part,” I said, and fetched a shopping bag full of spray cans. I pulled out a can and started to read the label. “The guy at the store said this spray glue stuff would work.”

McKayla’s bottom lip jutted out. “Oh. You wanted to put all these rolls up tonight?”

“Yeah, that’s the plan. If you gotta run, I understand.”

She frowned. “Oh … what time is your flight tonight?”

“Eleven.”

“Eleven?! Brett … I really appreciate it, but you don’t have time for this,” she said, a note of concern in her voice.

I waved her off. “It’s not so bad. We don’t have to deal with security because it’s a charter. I can roll up to the airport thirty minutes beforehand, no problem. I’ve got plenty of time.”

“But shouldn’t you enjoy your last few hours before you leave? Plus, you want to be rested for your game tomorrow, don’t you?”

I shrugged. “It shouldn’t take that long. A couple hours at the most, right? Besides, I don’t have anything else to do.”

“Well, I don’t know ifthat’strue,” she said, her voice husky. She took a seat on a bar stool, kicking her leg high in the air as she crossed it.

I froze.

Was it just me, or did that sound … kinda sexy?

Sure, I was intrigued, but I also had a job to do. I started to shake the spray can as the instructions on the label had said—vigorously.
