“So, like a week then?”
Melanie laughed. “Maybe a few.”
“Dammit,” Cameron smirked. “I will do whatever you want to do. This feeling… what we have between us right now. I don’t foresee that going away anytime soon. Or ever, for that matter. So you take all the time you need to process the divorce and get on the other side of it. I’ll be right here, waiting for you.”
“Now you’re just sounding like an eighties love ballad.”
“Well, it was the best time for music.” Tenderly, Cameron pulled Melanie into a hug and held her close. Melanie wrapped her arms around her waist, nuzzling her head against Cameron’s chin. “Thank you for understanding.”
“You’re welcome.” Cameron gently kissed her cheek. “Thanks for kissing me the other night.”
Melanie chuckled as Cameron held on tighter to her. “Anytime. But I have one request.”
“What’s that?”
“That we kiss one more time before we leave here.” Melanie pulled back so she could see Cameron’s face. But Cameron didn’t loosen her hold around Melanie’s waist, keeping them closetogether. “I know it’s best for myself and us to not rush into this, but going weeks without kissing you again sounds awful, too.”
“Well,” Cameron giggled, “I can’t disagree there.”
Tenderly, Cameron put her hand under Melanie’s chin as their lips came together softly. They kept the kiss short because, at least on Melanie’s end, she didn’t want anyone to catch them. Not when she was still legally married to Rob. The last thing she wanted to do was hurt Rob and start her relationship out with Cameron on a bad foot.
“Are we crazy for doing this?”
“Kissing in public?”
“Crossing the friendzone line we’ve been in for twenty something years.” Cameron gently ran her fingers down Melanie’s jawline as she spoke. “Because I’d be lying if I said I never dreamed this would happen.”
“Well, lucky for you, I’m tired of dreaming about being with you.”
Cameron’s brow furrowed at Melanie’s words as she continued.
“I’m ready to startlivingthat dream.”
“You’re good,” Cameron let out a sigh of relief. “I love you.”
“Now, you know you can’t say that before we’ve ever had our first official date.” She winked at Cameron, making them both laugh. “I love you, too.”
After one last kiss goodnight, the two got into their separate cars and headed home. All the while Melanie kept her fingers to her lips, begging the feel of Cameron’s lips on hers to linger there forever.
Chapter 9
Cameron
Having lived in Moonflower Cove most of her life, Cameron loved how she had been able to befriend so many amazing people of all ages. The diversity allowed her to have friends who were grandmas and friends who were fresh out of medical school. Cameron loved it, especially when she needed someone to talk to that wasn’t Melanie or had the last name Mackenzie.
She loved Isla and Vera with her whole heart, but she also knew exactly what they would tell her when it came to Melanie. They supported it, which Cameron was thankful for, but Cameron needed someone on the outside. Someone who knew her and Melanie but not as intimately as the Mackenzies did. Which was how she ended up at Carlson’s Cafe with Laura Rodgers.
Laura was the scheduler for the hospital. Although they worked in the same building and had similar schedules, Cameron rarely visited the top floor of the hospital. Mostly because the long hallways of offices often gave her flashbacks toThe Shining.
“So, what’s new in your life?” Laura asked over a hot club sandwich. “Kissed anyone I need to know about?”
Cameron’s eyes grew wide as she looked at her friend. “Who told you?”
“Who told me what?”
“Laura.”
“Cameron,” the slightest smirk played on Laura’s lips. “You know the hospital walls talk.”
