She’d gone over that night many times since Krol left after threatening her. “I’m pretty sure he was knocked out, and I wasn’t wearing my cinnamon and cardamom scent.”

Bosse stared off at nothing with a thoughtful expression. “That could be it.”

“What?”

“You have a way to hide your natural scent, right?”

“Yes. I’m not the only one in my clan who can do that.”

Nodding, Bosse said, “Beast had seen you down there before. He’s one hundred percent predator and might have realized at some point that you had no human scent.”

She frowned. “Is it possible for him to realize that?”

“Sure. My wolf had to tell me you had no human scent.” Bosse breathed deeply. “I enjoyed your spice scent and hadn’t thought that hard on it, but even now, I still can’t pick up your human scent.”

“It’s a protective spell I’ve worn since coming here in case I had a chance to run with Rez.” Bosse inhaled a deep breath close to her neck, which felt intimate. He smelled terrific and looked different. No shaggy hair and unkempt beard. Where had he been? What had happened to him? She had so many questions, but he stalled them when he ran his fingers over her hair, then pulled a strand to his lips and kissed it.

The hand on her back rubbed slowly up and down, relaxing the tension from her shoulders, then down to her waist, where his hand cupped her closer to him.

She put her hands on his shoulders, trying to decide if she should get off his lap or take advantage of the best spot to sit in this room. She wiggled her bottom to get even more comfortable.

He sucked in a sharp breath and cursed. “Don’t do that. I can’t think straight.”

Her body loved the sound of him excited. She’d never had that effect on another man. She’d only been with one other man, and he’d made her feel inferior as a woman when she’d complained he’d hurt when he’d made love to her.

After the erotic dreams with Bosse, she realized that her first time had not been making love at all—just inconsiderate sex.

On the other hand, maybe Bosse’s reaction was nothing more than a natural male reaction to any woman sitting on a man’s lap. That made more sense. She was no siren of the night.

She ran her hand down his chest and wished he didn’t have so many clothes on.

He grasped her hand. “Careful, sweetness. I can’t be distracted when I have men outside the castle waiting to hear from me.”

She sat up. “What men?”

“From the pack I found. I’ll tell you all about that later, but they needed me to get inside the castle to find another prisoner. I said I would so long as I could rescue you, too.”

She wanted that more than anything, but her wants never mattered more than her clan’s. Her heart hurt at what she had to admit. She’d seen her future and had to stay the course of her dreams, no matter how unfair they were. “I can’t leave the castle.”
