“What happened to the grimoire?” Xavier asked, pointing to the book laying open on the desk. He looked at Adrian for answers.
Adrian nodded. “It’s been put back together. His half and mine. Every page is available.”
“What?” Xavier asked, his eyes wide with astonishment, then he looked back at the grimoire.
“Trust me, we’re trying to figure this out too,” Adrian said, then he went back to reading the book.
“She’s on her way,” Shi informed me, placing her cell back into her pocket.
Nadia entered and it was time for Adrian and I to tell them what happened.
“What I’m about to say, I can’t explain, but it’s all true,” I said, then proceeded to tell my two bodyguards and Xavier what had happened the moment Adrian and I put the book together.
“Are you kidding me?” Xavier asked, then turned to Adrian for confirmation, a look of pure bewilderment on his face. “Is that what happened to you, too?”
Adrian nodded. “The book, in some way, has bound us. It belongs to us.”
“And it showed you all those visions? You saw your ancestors murdered?” Xavier asked us both.
Adrian and I both nodded, and Xavier walked over to Adrian, hugging him.
“I’m so sorry.”
Adrian hugged him back and I had to suppress my natural aggression that another male dared to touch what I considered to be mine. They were friends, partners, and I would have to accept the intimacies of their relationship. So, I remained silent and didn’t release the growled that was threatening to rumble.
“I’m fine. It’s okay,” Adrian said once they released each other.
“What about you, Sage? Are you okay?” Nadia asked me as she rubbed my arm.
“I’m fine. Angry about my father, but I’m okay,” I said as I looked at Adrian, trying not to stare as possessively as I felt.
“So, what does that even mean?” Shi asked.
I turned to her. “That part, we don’t know, which is why we called you three in,” I said, then walked over to the opened grimoire. “Come here. Can you see anything on the pages?” I asked Shi. I wasn’t worried about her seeing any spells. She didn’t have the ability to manipulate magic. But more importantly, I trusted her and Nadia with my life and all my secrets. I trusted my entire pack, which was my family, but Nadia and Shi were special.
She stepped over to the book and looked, then shook her head. “All I see are blank pages, it’s the same as before.”
“What about you, Xavier?” Adrian asked.
Xavier looked at the book. “I still can’t see anything.”
“Nadia?” I asked.
She looked at the book and shook her head, even after I flipped the pages. “Nothing.”
I turned to Adrian. “Only we can see the contents of this book, even with it being complete.”
“Only you ever could, though,” Shi said. “Well, your half, that is.”
It was true, only I could ever see the spells that my half of the book allowed me to see. I was just curious if anything had changed now that the book was complete.
“So, which one of you will be keeping the book?” Xavier asked.
Adrian and I locked eyes again, because that was a predicament, and we hadn’t had a chance to think about it. “Before we get into that discussion, we need to talk about my problem. Someone is trying to kill me and we need to figure out who. What spell in this book can reveal who this person is? If we need it, I do have one of the bullets that was meant for my head had I not moved in time.”
Adrian gasped and shook his head, then sighed. “Oh man, this shit is deep.” He licked his lips. “Look, if…ifI’m going to help you, I need to know everything. I need to know what I’m getting myself into if I take your case.”
I scoffed. “If?”
