“Material. But sometimes, that’s good enough.” I stood up, letting the water and bubbles cascade off my body and making sure I gave Adrian the full monty view. His eyes were glued to me and I could see the lust in them. It would have to wait and really, waiting was the fun part. Because the next time we fucked… I was going to make sure he screamed my name.

CHAPTER ELEVEN

Iwoke up with strong arms wrapped around me. I could feel the warm breath on the back of my neck from Sage sleeping soundly. The room was still dark because of the shades being drawn. I reached over to the lamp on the nightstand and turned it on. Now, I could see better. I gazed over my shoulder to look at Sage. He was beautiful. I loved his dark skin and how smooth and silky it felt. His full, shapely lips were closed and I really wanted to kiss them. His lashes were long and rested on his cheeks, cheeks that had bones in them that reminded me of Egyptian kings. His body was carved by the gods themselves and I couldn’t truly believe I was sharing a bed with him.

I also couldn’t believe he was a mobster. I think it was easier for me to accept him being a shifter and even a vampire than a mobster. Maybe because the other two were all about nature and circumstances out of his control. But being a mobster… that was a life he had chosen. Could I really join him in it? I didn’t know. But I knew I didn’t want tonotbe around him. I really couldn’t explain it, but I knew he was mine just like I was his. I believed that was why I worked so hard to save his life. Risking my own to get the vampire blood I needed for the spell.

I very gently removed his arm from around my waist and climbed out of the bed that put my full-sized bed to shame. I went to the bathroom to relieve myself and take a shower. Oh, wow, the shower was amazing! Water came at me from five different nozzles, and the heat was temperature controlled. Just top-notch technology and luxury all the way. A fella could get used to that. Even his shampoo and body wash were expensive. And I did indulge, because why the hell not? I turned the water off and when I stepped out of the shower, Sage was standing there, towel in hand.

“Enjoy the shower?” he asked me, smiling like the devil he was.

I took the fluffy towel from him and nodded as I began to dry myself off. “I loved it.”

He leaned against the wall, folding his arms over his very muscular and tattooed chest. “You know… I’ve got plenty of room here.”

I toweled off my hair. “Are you really asking me to move in with you?”

He nodded. “I mean… at least until we find out who’s trying to kill me. They know about your place now. It might not be safe for you to stay there. You or Xavier. And us being here together means we can continue to study the book.”

He was making some good points, yet something was telling me that his invitation was deeper than just safety and book reading convenience. But he wasn’t ready to be that honest, and I wasn’t so sure I was ready to hear the full truth. Maybe what he mentioned would be good enough. It wasn’t like he didn’t have a point. Still, I had to throw him a curve ball to see how he’d catch it.

“Well, I can always put a protection spell around my place,” I said.

“The security here is better. I mean, I was attacked at your place, not mine. Plus, there is the matter of the book,” he said. Catching my ball and tossing it quickly back at me.

I was quiet for a while, thinking about his invitation. “Let me run it by Xavier and I’ll get back to you?”

He sighed, but nodded. “Sure. Let me know.”

He stepped inside the shower and turned on the water. As much as I wanted to join him in that shower and fuck his brains out, I needed to find Lacey’s body. More importantly, I needed to find all of the ingredients to the spell that could help me revive her soul. First, I had to figure out what the hell aFishelwas andWolf’s Scenttoo. There were many terms in the spell book that I didn’t know what they meant, and it wasn’t like the fucking thing had a glossary in the back.

I put my clothes on that I’d worn the night before. First things first, go back home and pack a bag. Holy shit… pack a bag? I guessed I’d already decided to take Sage up on his offer. I looked back at the shower. The glass doors were fogged up with steam, but I could still make out his powerful figure bathing behind them. Oh, all I had to do was walk over to him, open the door, drop to my knees, and take his cock into my mouth to make both our days grand. I licked my lips as the fantasy floated in my mind, then shook my head. No. I had work to do.

“Sage, I’ll call you,” I said.

“Okay.”

I quickly turned and left before I lost all of my reserve. I found Shi in the living room cleaning her gun. She looked up at me, then back to her gun. “Are we cool?” I asked her, because I wasn’t sure. Did she blame me for what had happened to Sage? She was a hard one to read.

She didn’t bother to look up at me as she polished the gun. “Sage is cool with you from what I see.”

“Yeah… but are we cool?” I asked her. “You and Nadia mean a great deal to him.”

She looked up at me and put her gun on the table. “He barely knows you, and for that matter, neither do I.”

“I know, but there is something going on between us that neither of us can explain. The time… it… it doesn’t matter.”

She sighed. “I’m not going to sit here and try to pretend that I understand what’s going on between you and Sage. Fact of the matter is, I’ve known him long enough to know that he doesn’t get wrapped up in… relationships. He meets a hot guy, they fuck, and he moves on. He may even hang on to the guy for a few months if the ass and mouth are good enough, but he doesn’t get enamored. With you, he’s different. It’s like he’s made up his mind that you’re the one for him. And that makes me a little more protective of him because I don’t know you well enough to know if you are, in fact, the one for him.”

“I… I guess that’s fair,” I said.

“I will say this. I won’t stand in your way. Sage doesn’t make bad decisions and he certainly doesn’t need me telling him what he can and can’t do. He’s more than a big boy.” She arched and eyebrow. “Which I know you’ve experienced at least twice already.”

I snorted and turned my head so she couldn’t see my cheeks flushing. Man, I wasn’t some angel, but just the mention of Sage and him being naked or inside of me seemed to bring out my timidness. I felt…anew. I rather liked the sensation. I smiled, then returned my gaze back to Shi. I had no shame in me that I had taken Sage as my lover. Not after he’d pretty much let me see him for who he really was. I loved his honesty and his trust in me.

“Yeah, so, we’re cool as long as you’re cool with Sage.” She rose then and walked over to me, meeting me eye to eye because she was just that tall. At least six feet. “But you need to understand the world he lives in. Don’t be trying to change him. Sage likes being a mob boss. It thrills him. He can easily give it up, but he doesn’t want to. Do you get that?”

Okay, she was pulling no punches and she wasn’t wearing kid gloves. She was focusing on the one issue I really had about Sage. “But he could—”
