“You really can’t do anything right, huh?” she asked sharply.

Rolling my eyes, I took a step to the left, only to have her stand in front of me. When I moved to the right, the same thing happened. She wanted to playthatgame.

“This is stupid,” I told her.

“Evan is officially the most miserable person on campus,” Brie said, voice as icy as ever.

I shrugged at her. “And?”

“And it’s allyourfault.”

“I don’t have time for this.” Maneuvering around her, I held back a grumble when I heard Brie’s quick footsteps. Looked like she wasn’t going to give up.

“Do you know how muchworkI had to do to get Evan to break up with you? And it worked. For a second.”

That stopped me in my tracks. Turning around, I looked at Brie closely, trying to read her face. She couldn’t be trusted at all, but I was still trying to process what she just said to me. “W-What?”

“You don’t deserve to be with Evan. You don’t deserve to have his attention,” she spat out.

“I’m n-notwithEvan. We b-broke up.”

“I know that, but he can’t stop moping around. And I got him away from you, only for him to go back to his delusional state two weeks later.”

My eyes narrowed at her. She wasn’t making any sense and I had a feeling she was enjoying how much she was confusing me. “I know you think you’re so important, b-but m-me and Evan ending things had n-nothing to do with you.”

“I know why you two broke up.” She rolled her eyes. “Everyone does. It’s because he thought you were a lying, little freak.”

“Hewas the one who was wrong. This has n-nothing to do with you, anyway. Why are you trying to get involved?”

Brie scowled at me. “You should probably learn to not expose your secrets when you’re in public.”

“What the hell does that even m-mean?”

“I heard you in the library that day. Talking to your little, pale friend.”

I frowned, trying to understand what on earth she was telling me. But then it hit me. There had been that afternoon where I told Leena about my past with Asher. Mywholehistory. Every last, humiliating and terrifying thing. Not just the bullying, but the violence and the bakery and all my stupid secrets. And the check. Had that been her?

“You were eavesdropping,” I said lowly.

She gave me a little shrug. “Nope. Right place, right time.”

“That check from Evan… Someone stole it from m-my room. They cashed it.” My head shook slowly as I tried to put the pieces together. “Was that you?”

“Amazing work, right?” She grinned.

“How… What did youdo?”

“You have really bad luck, Daisy,” she said, her voice far too calm for a conversation about her utter deceit. “I mean, you blabbed about the check and how you wereso seton never using it. And then you made it worse when you admitted your little secret out loud: about your poor parents and the bakery and how it shut down and blah blah blah. Nobody cares.”

“This doesn’t m-make any sense,” I mumbled. “How’d you even get it?”

Brie stared at me closely. “Spare key. Remember? Leena just loves keeping things lying around. Don’t worry, I put it back.”

“Oh my God.” My eyes closed for a moment. “You have way too m-much time on your hands.”

“You’re the one who keeps weird souvenirs in your dorm. Who the hell keeps a card from when they were in hospital?”

I had looked all over my dorm for that thing. Under my bed, behind my desk, in between all the pages of my books.
