“You gotta be fucking joking, princess.” I shook my head at her, sporting a small grin.

“What?” She blinked at me. “Aren’t you gonna tell me I’m stupid for feeling the way that I do? That I’m a spoiled, stuck-up brat that disgusts you; and that you could never feel the way that I do?”

My grin widened. “Trust me. It would be a lot easier if you did disgust me.”

Holly had the chance to give me the tiniest of smiles when a loud voice announced the library was about to close and that we all needed to leave. I rolled my eyes, but I kept my arms in place, staring down at Holly.

“I thought you’d be angry at me…” she whispered. “I thought you would never want to kiss someone like me.”

“You can kiss me whenever you want. Trust me, I’m not gonna complain.” I said the words before I could stop myself. I was sick of having to hide it at that point. An idea hit me then. We couldn’t avoid it anymore. Me and her had to talk. “You wanna get outta here?” I nodded to the side. “I wanna show you something.”

Biting at her bottom lip, Holly eagerly nodded at me.

My hands slowly lowered, squeezing at her own as I pulled her out of the shelves.

It was time to tell Holly. Tonight was the night.

Chapter 38

HOLLY

Despite the silence, and despite who I was sitting in the truck with, I felt surprisingly comfortable and at ease. My heart was indeed racing. But it wasn’t because I was scared or nervous and racking my brain over who I was sat next to.

No. It was because Sawyer and I had shared a kiss for the second time. And it was just as perfect as the first time. His lips had felt so good. Soft and warm and so wonderfully inviting. When his hands had landed on my waist, his grip was so tight, like he didn’t want to let me go. All I knew was that I wanted to feel it again.

“We’re here.” Sawyer’s voice was gruff and low. As usual. But… there was less of an edge to his words.

I turned to face him. My eyes had been stuck on the window. On the too many to count trees that we had passed by to get to Sawyer’s desired destination. Wherever it was, I had never been there before.

“Where are we exactly?” I asked.

“Ridge Reserve. It’s a nice, quiet place. Good for thinking. I come here a lot.”

“At this time?” The moon had officially risen, but the sky wasn’t quite black yet. It was deep blue – the hue almost purple. The silver moon stood out, its light casting a soft glow on the water. I could see the outline of mountains in the distance. So far away…

“Usually later. It’s really pretty here late at night.” Sawyer got out of thecar. “Come on.”

I stepped out of the car, my arms wrapping around myself as the night air hit my bare skin.

“You want my jacket?” Sawyer offered.

I blushed. “That’s okay. I can handle a little cold air.”

“Come over here. I know a good place to sit. You can see the water perfectly. And the moon. Here.” Sawyer reached a hand out, his face screaming trust. Kindness. And something else I couldn’t quite put my finger on. All I knew was that no one else had ever looked at me like that.

I took his hand, instantly noting that it was so much bigger than mine. Sawyer led the way as we left the truck behind us. There was a small trail that he took me down, the sounds of rocks being kicked in the air the more we walked. It was all new to me. But it was pretty. The smell of fresh water met my nose. And the crisp night air just added to it, the natural scent rather intoxicating.

Sawyer gripped my hand harder the further down we went. He used his free hand to push some trees out of the way, making the trip a little easier. It took us a few minutes, but Sawyer soon came to a halt when I saw the moon casting a glow on a large rock. There were some more that surrounded it, but that one was the biggest, with a flat surface that seemed stable enough to stand and sit on.

“You good, princess?” Sawyer broke the silence.

“I can handle some rocks.”

Sawyer laughed, his fingers still laced with mine as he stepped up and on to the rock. He reached down, grabbing my other hand as he helped me up. It wasn’t a big leap, but I still appreciated the help. Sawyer sat down first, his hands letting go of mine. His long legs dangled over the edge of the rock, and I took it as my signal to join him.

I finally got a chance to really take in the sight before me. The sky had turned that little bit darker. It was a gorgeous, deep purple. It went on forever. There were so many stars above us, while the moon remained the most beautiful thing in the sky. It looked so big from where we were sitting.

I suddenly felt something heavy and warm on my shoulders. Looking down, I saw that Sawyer had placed his leather jacket on me. I blushed, wrapping it around me a little tighter. It smelled like him. Masculine and woodsy andperfect.
