He kissed the side of her blonde head, no longer in a rush to get upstairs. It was important that he feed her. Never in his life had he ever taken care of another person, but this was his mate. Trevelyan’s free palm slid around her body to flatten against her heart. Right where he’d pressed his handprint after they’d had sex.

Just his.

She contentedly ate her sandwich from his hand, leaning against him like it was no big deal. “If you could performonespell that you can’t do now, what would it be?” She asked, as if she was still brooding about her magic.

“I can do every spell.”

She flashed him a skeptical look.

“I can do all the onesworthdoing.” He allowed. “I can perform every type of wicked Badness there is.”

“So, whatGoodmagic would you do, if you suddenly could? Don’t stop to think about the answer. Your first impulse is always right.”

A love spell.

The thought flittered through his mind and he frowned. Love spells were Good, at least the harmless, protective kind that had popped into his head. He wanted his magic wrapped all around her, keeping her safe. That part was easy enough. But he also wanted her to feel happy and needed. He wanted to always be linked to her, so neither of them would ever be alone.

“I don’t want to cast any Good spells.” He muttered, instead of saying any of that.

Esmeralda took another bite of sandwich. “If I could only do one spell, I would blast through the force field around the castle.” She decided with a thoughtful nod. She shot another doubtful glance his way. “Are yousureyou can’t do that, yet?”

He was sure he’d used all his magical reserves on far more important things. “I’m sure.”

One eyebrow arched.

Trevelyan smiled blandly. “Can we have sex, now?”

“I have no idea why I like you so much.”

Neither did he, but he figured it was only fair, considering how much he liked her. Really, the situation should be evenmorefair. Esmeralda should like himbest. Best of everyone. He liked her best of everyone, after all.

Inside his mind, a new goal took shape. Or maybe it had been lurking there all along and now he was willing to examine it. She had to decide on him as her mate. That would be themostfair. It was the only way to ensure she needed him the way he needed her. He should have all of her. Every piece. Why should he have to settle for less than everything? He was a dragon! Trevelyan nuzzled the curve of her neck, breathing in her scent and silently plotting.

He had to convince Esmeralda to keep him.

The Club Castle

It was an awkward date, by any measure. Things always got weird when a girl’s parents came along.

The Mad Hatter was sitting at one end of a long table, in the Club Palace’s onyx-black-and-icy-white dining room. He was drinking tea like it was hard liquor and putting globs of mustard on his jam sandwich.

“Jam yesterday and jam tomorrow, butneverjam today.” He announced to one and all, even though he was very obviously eating jam today.

Everyone else at the table was having Mock Turtle soup, as an appetizer. It grossed Bluebeard out, since his uncle had been a Mock Turtle. But Dijon mustard mixed with strawberry jam grossed him out even more, so he was swallowing the kind-of-cannibal-ish soup and keeping his complaints to himself.

Snow White was sitting next to her father. She was all decked out in a blue and yellow dress, her black hair curled intobouncy ringlets. Some might say the style was a little young for her, but Bluebeard was of the opinion that a woman could wear whatever she wanted to on a date. Her clothes were all gonna come off anyway, so who gave a shit?

The Queen of Clubs sat at the other end of the table, angrily flipping through medical text books on witches. Because… sure. That made as much sense as anything else that had happened recently.
